Licking your freezer clean might be more productive than this, but at least they both love heavy metal. Here are the old men, Adam and Steven. Yes, welcome all to it. This is the Old Men Who Yellow Clouds Podcast, when we get together to talk about the things that matter to us. We are episode number 152. As we recorded, it is March the 2nd, 2025. It is approximately 11 a.m. and we are podcasting live out of Vancouver, British Columbia.
SPEAKER_00Yes, uh, and we honor and acknowledge that we join you today from the traditional ancestral and unceded shared territory of the uh Musqueam, Squamish, and Slave with Tooth Nations. Good day, good day. You know it.
SPEAKER_01Uh, that sexy voice you heard with Stephen. Hello, Stephen.
SPEAKER_00Sexy, yes. Hi, Adam.
SPEAKER_01Hello, uh before we get into the things that matter to us, you can support our podcast by hitting our webpage, oldmenhooyellaclows.com, and subscribing to our podcast. And if you want to help us out, please buy us a coffee. We have a coffee addiction. We need coffee. I get Starbucks every day. It's a dirty habit, dirty, dirty habit. But uh, you know what? I like it. Me too. I've got another one going here right now. So it's uh what's it's what happens and what's happened. Shit, I don't even remember when we last chatted. It was like two weeks ago. It was only two weeks. It seems like it's bad longer.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah, because uh you never know with us. It could go a couple months.
SPEAKER_01It has done a couple months in the past, yeah. Hey, life cat life happens. I'm not I'm not uh I'm not knocking it at all. It's it's one of those things. Yep. Um since uh since we chatted last, I uh this past weekend I went to see the magical Deftones. Here is it playing in the background. I got my ass kicked in the kit by all the kids. Uh man, we're getting old for shows, man. It's uh like especially like Deftones for me are a super high school band, so like you know, like came out one of the first shows I saw were Deftones. Um the very first show I saw was Um Kiss. The second show I saw was Ozfest, and the third show I saw was Deftones at the Creation Culture Center here in Vancouver. Yeah. And um it was just I like I remember it very, very vividly. I remember like I remember the time. I remember going backstage, well not going backstage, but going behind the like the um the venue and like meeting the guys from the Deft Tones and stuff. Like I remember it really well. So it was really cool to kind of relive my childhood, but I'm about you know 30 years, 100 years old that happened. Yeah, and like I was in the like I haven't been in a crazy pit in a while. I was with a bunch of friends in the back, and they opened with Be Quiet and Drive, and everyone everyone just did that mad rush towards the stage. I'm like, I'm fucking going. So the people I went, I'm like, you want to come with? They're like, no, no, no. So I just went in by myself and I was like four away from the front, but it's one of those pits that you're it was like swaying back to back. And God bless the ladies of Seattle. They came out to party, like they were looking good, their boobs were out, and so I was next to this chick, and I was leaning into her, and I'm like, I'm so sorry, I'm so sorry. Hey, I'm so my name is Adam, as I'm like crushing into this poor lady, and we're back, and she's with all her friends, and they're like arm in arm, and it kind of got more sway, whatever it is. And one of the late they broke off and she got separated, so I just kind of reached over, grabbed her, and pulled her back toward her friends, and she's just like, Oh my god, thank you so much. I'm like, Yeah, no problem. Uh but um good deed of the day. Yeah, that was I I saved the day, it was a good day, it was a good time. Um, I was pretty drunk. And uh so I think I think that helped. It it took some of the pain away, and then afterwards we got even more drunk, and uh I think that really helped. Uh didn't sleep very well that night, but uh so that was Thursday night into Friday. But Friday night I slept like a fucking boss. Like I I sleep track every night. Do you sleep track with your um with your watch? Do I sleep crack?
SPEAKER_00What the hell do you think? Sleep track, sleep track, sleep crack. Do you take crack to go to sleep? Is that what is that a new thing? You never heard of that. Um I do yeah, I do track sleep with with my watch. Yes. Yeah. I don't do crack, but I do track.
SPEAKER_01Uh shit. I need something hard in beer these days. But um, there's um that so I sleep track with a T, and um I slept like the dead on Friday. I got like 10 hours of sleep, nine of it was deep sleep. Like it was just the greatest sleep of my life. So if you want to sleep, get your ass kicked by the kids in the mosh pit. Let's see what I'm gonna say about that.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. So that that first show you saw the Doth Deftones back in what when was that? Like what was that? Uh how long a was that? 99, I think. 99, okay.
SPEAKER_01It was after they came here with Ozfest.
SPEAKER_00Okay.
SPEAKER_01And 99. That Oz Fest was the first time I saw Sabbath.
SPEAKER_00Right. Yeah, you mentioned that before. Yeah. Um, next question is uh sorry, sorry to hear you're going to the US still. I know we talked about that last time. Uh my question is have you noticed anything at the border? Is it any different? I know you've got your Nexus card to make it easier. Just don't say it out loud. Oh, shh. Yeah, but you everybody knows that. Already? Yeah. Everybody knows that. We've talked about that before. Yeah. Uh have you, but have you noticed, card or not, have you noticed any changes at the border with all the bullshit going on? I suspect not, but I mean who knows? Who knows?
SPEAKER_01It's pretty uh it's pretty smooth sailing. Yeah, there's no no real issues. I mean, you know, with the magical card of awesome. Uh you just kind of rip through. And you know what I found out recently, because of uh me working with the government and I'm working with transit police and police and fire and all this stuff on a regular basis. When they pull up my record, all the shit comes on. Like it goes, it shows all every interaction I've had with the police and you know, yeah, which I didn't know. Yep. And so I was shooting the shit with a guy one day. He looks at me and he goes, What do you do for work? I'm like, Well, I work for you know BCRT's guy trade. And he goes, Oh shit, yeah, because it shows you're working with us all the time. I'm like, was that a good thing or a bad thing? And he goes, No, it's cool. Like it just shows that you are, you know, like that you're actively working and that you should have you have the right to hold this cart. I'm like, Oh, that's cool. So then I started fucking with these guys. So I went through the going through the border. Like, what do you do for work? I'm like, oh, I have a story, I'm not allowed to talk about it. And they just kind of look at me weird, and I'm like, okay, have a good day. And I just I just kind of went through. So I did that one time. That was that was pretty funny. But uh yeah, no, it's uh it's it's it's good. And yeah, so I haven't really noticed, and when I was in the States, I was just in Seattle. We've been to Seattle a couple times. I stayed at the pineapple hotel, it's like 5th and something, I forget what it was. A decent, decent place. But um, there were actually a bunch of other Canadians up there seeing this gig. There's people what you just don't realize anymore, and now that you're kind of getting older and ripping around, there's a lot of people who travel for shows. I met a guy, some the people who were standing next to the pit before uh Deftones hit the stage. Uh people came up from Idaho. It was an eight-hour drive from Idaho to Seattle.
SPEAKER_00Seattle to see Deftones. Wow. Yeah, that's a that's a bit of that. Are they long drive? Yeah, no kidding. Is that um were they checking out other shows or were they following the band for along the road way for a couple shows, or what was happening? That's a long time.
SPEAKER_01Just a one and done. They saw the show and then they said they were driving back right after, taking turns driving four hours and four hours.
SPEAKER_00That's pretty hardcore. I mean, I guess, yeah, if you're younger. I I and I know sure we've driven to Seattle and back for a show in a in a night, and even that is tough, right? It is, it really is. It's so to do uh an eight-hour drive each way. I don't know. Yeah, that's hardcore. It's it's hard to be a big fan.
SPEAKER_01To be honest with you, I'd actually rather do that drive because our Canadian dollar isn't worth shit in the States right now. Like our dollars were 69 cents. Yeah, so um to stay a night in a hotel, it's 250 to 30. I think it was like 285, whatever it is. But they did offer free beverages, so we had a couple free beverages, so that was okay. Uh, but then you have to wake up in the morning, you have to pay for food in the morning because you're up and running around. Yeah, and then you have the day in Seattle, so you're paying for some other activities and whatever it is, and then you have to drive back. Whereas if you just go down for the night, yeah, you know, you can see the show, have a beverage or two before the show, see the show, get in your car and rip back. Like it's it's it be it becomes a long day, but the drive back, like I've done it so many times, and I'm also a night owl, so like my regular bedtime is four in the morning. So for me, it doesn't really make much of a difference. But if you're not uh if you're not really a night owl or or do that, you're kind of screwed, so you might have to actually stay the night.
SPEAKER_00But yeah, if you're making a weekend of it, it's probably a little more worthwhile, and you've got some other things you want to do and stuff like that, or a couple shows across a couple days. Um as I mentioned when we went to San Francisco, it's just yeah, it the the exchange rate just sucks. It it really does. You're you're paying so much more money. Uh things are expensive as it is, yeah. You throw in the exchange rate and it just sucks, man. It really does.
SPEAKER_01So it sucks. So I don't know. What are you gonna do? Yeah, but like you know, we talked about this last week or last time we should start change well, boycotting the USA because of the tariffs and fucking Orange Man and uh the stuff he did with uh did you watch that conference he did at the Oval Office? Zelensky, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, what a it's really you know he talks about other people being disrespectful, and he mentioned it to Zelensky during the during the blow-up that they ended up having. I mean, talk about dis disrespectful himself. Like he's gonna look in the fucking mirror, man. He's just an arrogant oh fuck. Um just you know, I I swear lots on this show, I swear lots all the time, and I want to swear more right now. And I just I just cannot stand that that what he's doing. I cannot I I cannot believe that he's a leader of a powerful country, yes, and he's treating other people and leaders like the way he does. He's gotta look in the mirror, he's gotta stop being a dick. Um he's gotta stop being so arrogant. Like, like like just I'm sure you did. I I mean you watched it. Just listen to every single word that he's saying and the way he says it. It's like it's like he's the best, we are the best, America is the best, don't fuck with us, or else, and and and you know, it's like and he's and he's not even listening to what Zelensky was saying. Uh I give Zelensky credit because he was fairly composed. Um he tried to be patient, he tried, you know, because Trump and and Vance, Vance is just a he's just a puppet with a with a mouth. Um he just uh yeah, he doesn't he's seems like he doesn't have a mind of his own. Um but Zelensky, you know, you know, tried to be patient. I I just you know Ukraine did not start that war. You know, Russia Russia invaded in 2014. That was the Crimea, and then the of course the main war started, you know, three years ago. Ukraine didn't start that. I mean, and and Trump is treating Zelensky like it's all his fault, and that you know, he could end it right now if he if he if he wanted to. Well, yeah. Well he's got he's got invaders, he's got another country uh invading his own and killing people. I mean, it's like sure he wants peace. He doesn't like his own people being killed. Trump makes it sound like he doesn't give a shit. He doesn't care about peace, he doesn't care that his people are getting killed. Um and yeah, it's uh yeah, I don't know. It's it's just really sad. I I just have I have less and less respect for the guy, and um and of course I didn't have any in the first place. So I mean yeah, it's it's pretty pretty sad. I don't know.
SPEAKER_01And uh I you know this, but uh obviously he pushed back the tariffs to April 2nd, so another month on it. Oh, has he? Was that out just out today then? Uh it came out uh it came out a couple days ago. I got the news alert on the 26th of February.
SPEAKER_00Are you sure? Because I think tariffs are still coming on Tuesday. That's what I thought. Tariff Tuesday, March 4th.
SPEAKER_01Uh I got I oh fuck. I have April 2nd. Uh so I got the it was from uh uh News 1130. So it says U.S. Donald Trump has pushed back the tariffs on Canada and Mexico for another month, saying they will now be implemented on April 2nd. The delay comes two days after Trump said the 25% tariffs would be moving ahead March 4th. Oh, okay, okay. Uh he says he made the statement during the cabinet meeting Wednesday in Washington.
SPEAKER_00Oh, okay. I I did not know that. I thought they were still coming on Tuesday and they were going to be across the board. And because he's still saying drugs is a big part of the problem. And if you look at the information that Canada is being is releasing, you know, not many, not much fentanyl was crossing the border from Canada into US anyways. In fact, more was coming from the US into Canada. Uh, but now it sounds like they've cracked down even more. Like they've they've they've confiscated so much fentanyl that was potentially going to go across the border. And and and yeah, so whatever it is they're doing is working. Um even just a little bit of fentanyl is too much fentanyl. Uh but they are doing a pretty good job. And uh yes, it's costing a lot of money and a lot of manpower, and whatever it is they're doing is working. Um will it ever drop down to zero like Trump wants it to? Well, probably not, but uh anyway, I don't know. It's uh we'll have to see what happens. Okay, well, it's good he's he's he's he's given us a little bit of breathing room until April 2nd now. What a nice guy, eh?
SPEAKER_01Well, like but you know, so like why is there like I I can't I wasn't able to find why it's getting pushed back. And is it because Trudeau is pushing back? But like what like what's the real reason? Do you know why it is, or he's just an idiot, and everyone's saying you're an idiot, don't do this. Like, what's the reason why they're being pushed back in the first place?
SPEAKER_00That's a good question. I don't know that answer, obviously. And um uh, because again, I didn't even hear that it's pushed back again a second time now. So um he he's he's uh he's toying with us, he's who like who knows the answer? He's toying us with us, he he's trying to make it sound like he's in control, like he knows what he's doing, but to me it just seems like he's well he he doesn't. He he yeah, he doesn't. Maybe he's waiting to see what happens in Canada once a new leader comes in. Uh, because that's going to be next um that's next week. That's next, is that next Sunday? Next Sunday, I think, is when the Liberals choose their new leader who becomes president or president. Here we go. I'm listening to Trump too much. Uh although Trump says uh governor, not uh prime minister. Anyway, yeah. Uh new prime minister next week, once that leader is uh voted in. Um then Parliament I think opens, I think later here in March. Is he waiting to see what happens with that? I can't see why that would make a difference either, but maybe he wants to see who our new leader is and go from there. See what he see what you know they can what kind of deal maybe they can put in place or something like that. I don't know. Who knows with him, right?
SPEAKER_01And do we do we have to vote again for this? We're voting again for this, aren't we? Or are they just appointing? How does that work?
SPEAKER_00We do not vote for the leader of the Liberal Party. Um it's a it's a liberal party thing. You you could become a member of the Liberal Party and then have your votes, I think. That's how it works. Yeah, so it's you have to be it's so it's internal to the party. Anybody can be a uh a member. Um but yes, it's it's an internal thing, it happens automatically. It's not a general election or national election or federal election. Um that will come after, uh, because I think once parliament opens, I think the other parties are going to um vote non-confidence, new leader, everything going on, of course. Uh um, so who knows what will happen. An election will happen at some point between April and the fall time, I suspect, but who knows when. Who knows exactly when.
SPEAKER_01I was reading something, but uh then I lost track. Uh I just know that, yeah, it's gonna be it's gonna be a big change of the guard here for a while, and I don't know if that's gonna be a better thing or a worse thing. Like, we don't know. Like, what's well it's always been a shit show.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I mean it hey, you know what? Regardless of who's in there, it just seems like these politicians are all the same. Having said that, some are worse than others, of course. Um Truto obviously lost confidence uh uh of uh his own party, uh lost confidence of the people of Canada. Uh so he did the right thing, I guess, and stepped down or is stepping down. Um I don't know. I think the new leaders are one of uh you know what it's gonna be Christina Freeland or this Mark Carney. I don't know if you've been following this or I don't know if you care a little bit or whatever. So it's gonna be one of those two who uh will win. And um I I think I think you know, personally, I I'm from what I've read, I think Carney is the better choice here. But and of course, regardless of who though who it is though, Freeman, Freeland or Carney, either one is better than PP. Pierre PP. Um Pierre P he's a mini Trump. Um did didn't Trump say something about him last week saying he's not enough like me? Like, like again, here's the arrogance, here's the egomaniac of Trump. He he wants he wants PP to be more like him, and uh, and then maybe they'll get along better, and maybe Canada and and uh uh US won't fight so much or something like that, and we can move forward with this. But yeah, PP is just the same, same as Trump. He's not he's not any different, despite some of the things he's been saying lately. Wow. So anyway.
SPEAKER_01Speaking of Orange Man, did you see the stuff about Gretzky? I know you had it in your post, but yeah, yeah. That's uh well, so what do you think? Like Gretzky is considered the GOAT, the greatest of all time in hockey. Um, who's the guy who's catching up to him? He's like 13 goals away.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it's Alex Ovechkin, I think, is now 10 away from 10 away from tying or breaking or something like that. He's he's he's close. That's a record that people thought would never be broken. They thought Gretzky he holds a number of records, of course, and that was that obviously is a massive record. Number of goals, most goals scored in the NHL, and and here a Russian is about to break that record. And you know what? I don't I don't know that I ever really thought too much about it in the past, and you know, especially now with the Russia, what's going on with Russia and Ukraine, and and you know, you would think that you know, why would you want a Russian to break the a record that is has stood the test of time for of decades now and um people thought would never be broken, and and now it's probably gonna happen this within the next uh possibly in the next month. Um you know what I I I'm not a fan, you know, Vetskin's obviously a great hockey player too. So you know what? I at this point, yes, I'm happy. I am happy that he's gonna break Gretzky's record, even if he is a damn Russian. Um but but but Gretzky Gretzky has done a lot of things recently, and and it's maybe some of it was in this article. Maybe you know are aware of this. I don't know. Like he he was given the order of Canada. I don't know, I don't know when that happened. He didn't even bother coming up to Canada to accept it. Okay, maybe busy, whatever. I don't know. I don't know what you're not busy, but get the plan come up for two days, like you have a yeah, whatever.
SPEAKER_01Fuck.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah. Anyway, the things though that recently, of course, have pissed everybody else off is number one, his support for Trump. He he was at his party, he has vocal uh voice, he's been vocal about his support for Trump. What really pissed me off, and I saw it as it happened during that Canada-US game. Um he he was uh each team has an you know made uh another player an ambassador for their team. Canada made Gretzky their ambassador, so they walk them out onto the ice and they do the introductory or honorary face-off or the the you know the the thing that they do before games. He walked out, of course, he did walk out. I don't know why, they made them walk out at the players' bench of the United States. But he walked out, he was giving the thumbs up to all the US players as he was walking by the bench. He walked up to center ice on the red carpet, and he never looked at Team Canada once. He was looking at the United States players that were lined up on the blue line, giving them the thumbs up. It's like, who the fuck are you? Do you know do you know even know why you were there? Like you are there because you are the uh honorary captain. Again, what uh whatever word it was or designation that he was supposed to have. Uh, but it was for Canada. He never acknowledged Team Canada at all as he walked out onto the ice, like, not even a little bit. And and now, of course, everybody is crossing. That's oh, you shouldn't leave Gretzky alone, his wife is crying, Trump is crying. Everyone's crying. Everybody's crying. Um, but people are pissed off. And I guess you know what? I sh it's just a hockey game, but with everything going on right now, people are really, you know, really pissed off about a bunch of things, and we're trying to stick together here as Canadians. And here he this asshole is who has lived in the United States for decades now because he's married to to somebody down there. Well, he played hockey, he ended up playing hockey down there. Um, but but yeah, it's it's like, well, they wanna they wanna uh get rid of a uh of a name, a street name in Ebbington now because of all this. So there's a petition out to do that, and and you know, strip him of his order of Canada or whatever it is. And you know, I don't know if that they're ever gonna do that, but uh yeah, people are pissed off. That's that's that's what this is all about. People are pissed off because of everything that's going on with the United States, and here's a Canadian, a respected uh player, a person, or at least he was. Uh, sure, yes, he is still probably the greatest offensive player to ever play the game. Um I mean, come on, he's still a Canadian citizen. Like, like what's your problem, man? Like, what what are you doing? Um and and yet you wonder why people are pissed off at you. Well, look in the fucking mirror, just like Trump should.
SPEAKER_01It's like, you know, they say never meet your heroes, you know, and as your hockey player growing up, a Canadian hockey player growing up. I'm assuming when Gretzky is one of your heroes. But imagine being at that Canada game, you're representing Canada, and Gretzky walks by and doesn't even acknowledge you. Yeah, like what a kick in the fucking beats.
SPEAKER_00Um Bobby is my always my favorite player, and I think you know what, maybe we talked about it this about this at some point. I can't remember, but but he's he I he was my favorite player growing up, not Gretzky. Yeah, um Bobby came along before Wayne Gretzky did. Um he's he's pissed me off. See, he I think it was Trump's first election, wasn't it? He took out a full I I think so, I can't remember, but I he took out a full page ad uh in the States in supporting Trump. But Gretzky? Uh no, Bobby Orr did.
SPEAKER_01Oh, Bobby Orr.
SPEAKER_00And you know what? When that happened, I've stopped. I have a Bobby Orr jersey. Um, I stopped wearing it. Um I'll never wear it again. He has come out in defense of Wayne Gretzky here now. Oh, okay. Um in fact, I think he took out another full-page ad in some newspaper, you know, saying, Hey, hey, come on, Gretzky's Canadian, he's the greatest hockey player, and blah blah blah. And you know, leave him alone. Well, no. We aren't gonna leave him alone. So, so, you know, so Bobby Orr is the same, he's the same thing. You know, he's Canadian, he's certainly, you know, Gordy Howe, Bobby Orr, Wayne Gretzky are probably the three best Canadian hockey players ever. Uh, again, you can throw another handful in that list because there's a lot of good ones. But if you ask who the greatest player was, it'd probably be one of those three, depending on which you know, which era you grew up in. Um yeah, they're so they're all Canadians, and uh of course, yeah. So two of them now are a bunch of fucking Americans, uh American Trump loving assholes. So what are you gonna do? Yeah. Anyway. Wow. There's lots to talk about with all this stuff. There's lots going on, there's lots to talk about. Um and and and Trump right now is playing us, or he thinks he would like to think that he's playing us with a bunch of strings, like we're a bunch of puppets, right? He's dangling us and he's he's uh oh, full tariffs uh March 4th. Oh, okay. No, maybe I'll change my mind. Let's do it. Oh, yeah, no, for sure, they're coming March 4th. No, okay. Well, let's do it April 2nd now. Let's, I don't know, let's just uh yeah, he's stringing us along. And why is he doing that? I don't know, but he needs to stop. He needs to stop. Somebody just needs to fucking get control of him and tell him to shut the fuck up and mind his own business, take care of his own people, um, which he thinks he's doing, but he's but he's not, and and just move on, right? Leave everybody else alone, leave the rest of the world alone.
SPEAKER_01I don't even know what to say anymore. You just gotta watch it unfold. And like you said, don't visit the states, buy support Canadian, buy Canadian, and all the stuff you can to make sure that uh you're not supporting them or anything like that. Did you see that the um aluminum is going up for like beer beer and pot can stuff? Did you see all that shit was going up?
SPEAKER_00Well, so that's part of the tariffs too, but that was something separate. Is that tariff in place yet? I don't think that one is in place yet, even though prices have started going up, I think. Um so that was that was a different tariff that he talked about. And again, I'm I'm confused now. I'm lost. I don't know what's happening or what's coming and what's not, right? So but it is they are preparing for it, and I just think because they are preparing for it, it's caused prices to go up already.
SPEAKER_01Yep.
SPEAKER_00And I know that's affecting microbrews and you know, these small uh small breweries, and um you know, because they it's you know they are going to be uh spending more money to get their products to the streets, and of course it's gonna rub off on us, right?
SPEAKER_01So getting screwed every day, and uh, but you know, to beat that before all the prices went up, I went and bought four hundred dollars worth of beer about three weeks ago. So I'm good to go. You're good, all right. But like three flats, I'm sitting sitting downstairs. I'm I'm ready to rock for a couple months. So okay.
SPEAKER_00Well, you gotta be prepared. Um we have you know, we've been pretty good, I think. We have stopped. Um I I placed one order to Amazon. I told you I canceled my Amazon Prime, and yeah, yeah. You could still obviously order from you don't need a Prime membership to order from Amazon. But I I I mean I've essentially stopped. I there was something that I wanted to order uh a couple weeks ago, so I took care of that. But you know, I'm I'm going to try not to buy anything from Amazon. Um you know, there's I haven't been to Starbucks, you know, at all. I we we not, you know, we there we we do like going to other coffee places anyways, but hey, Starbucks is everywhere. You sometimes find yourself going there uh more often than you maybe you plan to, but I haven't been to Starbucks in since all this kind of started. Uh the better half has said like she's not going to Old Navy anymore. Old Navy is an American company, they sell some good clothes, some cheap shit, and yeah uh it's a nice place to shop, but hey, they're American, so she's stopped shopping there. Um, you know, we're trying to buy stuff on the shelves that are made in Canada. Yeah. Um, so you know, we are doing our bit. We certainly aren't traveling to the United States anymore, that's for damn sure. Um not in the next four years. Um I don't know. We're we're trying to do our bit, right? And I think uh for us it's important. Um it should be important for everybody uh in this country, but um you know, even a little bit. Try and do what you can.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it's uh it's gonna be a very interesting couple of uh couple of months um just with everything happening. And uh, you know, we we I mean uh you know do your bet to do whatever it is and shop Canadian, all that all that stuff, and hopefully it uh hopefully more people join on so you can make some sort of movement and and uh try to fight for the greater good, if that makes any sense.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, no, that makes sense. Yeah. And and our and our governments are trying to do more too, right? Canada is trying to to partner or you know work more with other countries other than the United States. Uh the Canadian provinces and territories are trying to work together more, trying to drop drop some of the internal tariffs or restrictions uh that happen between provinces and territories, which I think are just kind of ridiculous. Again, yeah. I think they're report put in place again to protect workers and the people of your province. And I get that, but hey, we're we've gotta we've gotta work more together here in Canada now, and and those restrictions need to go away. So and that will make things better and cheaper for everybody. Uh that's big picture, right? Again, yeah, who knows? Maybe some people could end up getting hurt. Uh, you know, I don't know, and you don't want people to lose money, but you don't want businesses to to to lose money and then have to shut down. But you know, for for all Canadians as a whole, it's the right thing to do. So the faster that happens as well, then then the better off we're gonna be. Yeah. It's very interesting. Some very interesting stuff coming up. Yeah, yeah, for sure. There's lots of there's lot, again, there's lots going on. There's so many pieces uh that are part of this. There's so many people that are affected. Um and um and again, the point is we just gotta you know make sure we work together.
SPEAKER_01This is true. This is a very, very true. Uh, you've had a piece of uh uh something I found that was super hilarious, is that um we've been saying it forever. If you're sick, stay home. Don't fucking go to work. You have sick days for a reason, just stay at home. Um, I was fighting the plague. I don't actually know. I was I sick last time we chatted. I think I don't know if I was or yeah, you talked about it for sure.
SPEAKER_00I don't you I think you did still, you had something, I think, anyway.
SPEAKER_01I was thinking it was fighting something off. I actually got super sick when I went to uh like the sickest I've been in a long time was last December. Uh it was when I was working at uh Taylor Swift show. So I got sick probably on that Friday. I went and worked Friday. I was at uh Stadium, which is our uh transit hub station here in Vancouver and uh Miss Swift is playing BC Place, and then I was attended the show on the Sunday, and I was sick on the Tuesday. And I think I'm still sick from that because I was I couldn't like stop coughing. Uh I went and so she saw my doctor about six weeks after. I'm like, I can't shake this cough. I'm taking Buckley's, I'm fucking taking pills and stuff. It's the only long symptom I have. And uh she did a COVID test on me right there, and uh she said, No, you don't have the COVID. I'm like, okay, well that's good. Uh and then I kind of got sick again. I think it would have been maybe it might have been like the week just before we chatted. Uh but uh now I have allergies because it's I think we're uh here in Vancouver, spring has sprung, so it's uh it's cold at night and hot during the day, but it's uh allergies are kicking my ass. But the thing I found about this is the doctors are scrapping paperwork to uh to make room for to do other doctor things. But the problem is is that if you're sick from work for you know a couple days and if you're trying to be the good person and stay at home while you're sick, after like two or three days, your work is gonna require you to go get a note. Because it's uh such an old school way of thinking. Just because we're adults and whatever it is, they want you to, you know, you should be able to make your decisions, but your workplace wants you to go get a note, which I find fucking hilarious. Uh, because you have to get a note, otherwise you get in trouble, trouble from your work. I'm sick. Well, show me proof. A doctor just writes on a note, hey, you're sick. Like, fuck. Like, what else are you supposed to put on the note? You know what I mean? It's such a it's such an old way of thinking, which it is just stupid. And it's it's also goes to your employee or employer, they can't trust you for calling in sick. Like it's it's bullshit.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Well, it's you know, most organizations have sick days for their workers and stuff like that. So, and so people should use them, right? And um, that's that's that's where it starts. If you're sick, stay home, regardless of the doctor's note. If you're sick, stay home. Um, you know, because because if you, you know, I mean, this is this is obvious. I shouldn't have to say this, but if you're sick and you come to the office, well, then you're gonna spread it around, and more people are gonna be sick, uh, more people are going to be away from the office, less people are going to be able to do their jobs, and then the company as a whole is gonna suffer for that, right? So, duh, it's obvious, right? So, why why are um why are organizations fighting this? I I don't I don't get it. Um you know, you know, they yeah, it's uh you know, I have a really good relationship with my doctor, and most people probably do. So yeah, the sad thing is some people don't have doctors, and that's and that's another I'll get to that, I guess. That's another piece of this. But I have a good relationship with my doctor. I could probably go to him and say, hey man, I've I've had a sinus infection for five days now. You know I've got a history of it. Uh, you know, but I missed work for four days last week. Uh, can you write me a note? He he would do it. Like he would he would do it. He he trusts me, he knows me, he would uh he'd he'd take care of it. But but um where was I going with this? Uh I don't know. Well, well, so there's the other thing. A lot of people don't have a doctor, and uh there's there's a shortage of doctors in many places. Why, you know, if if employers require a note, well, I I don't I don't have a doctor. How am I supposed to get a note if I don't have a doctor? Well, all of these doctors are too busy writing notes for other people, they don't have time to take on new patients, right? So I mean you see so you see the see what's happening here? It's just and again that that's just kind of obvious, really. Um so yeah, so I don't know, people just need to it it starts with people though. It it really does. I mean, yes, employees have to employers have to trust their employees, but you know, because they they could stop paying you. I think a lot of them have policies in place where okay, if you're sick for for more than three days and you don't have a doctor's note, we don't have to pay you anymore. Sure, you've got sir, sure there is insurance and stuff that takes care of sick time, and if you end up going on short-term disability, you know, that covers part of it. And but you don't want to involve your insurance companies um for short-term stuff like that. Uh I think employers just need to be a little bit better about all this, uh, and just a just a little more common sense. So um, yeah, it's uh yeah, it's I don't know. But it's but again, it goes it comes back to people. People have to be smart, they have to be respectful of all everybody else around them. If you're sick, stay home. It's it's really as simple as that, right?
SPEAKER_01So even if you feel like you're getting sick, stay at home. Because that day of rest might be the difference maker in you getting full-blown sick or just having a little tickle in your throat.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, absolutely. Because you don't know how so how contagious you are at that point. Um, you could easily pass it on to somebody else, even if you don't feel really that bad.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. You know, I want to I was it's while they were talking about sickness and all that stuff. Have you still have you continued to wear a mask? Are you still masking up when you're going to places Costco, concerts? Oh, yeah, you're not going to be shows. Um airplanes, um, you know, and all that stuff. Like, are you still wearing a mask for anything at all, or have you given up, or or do you remember the last time you put a mask on?
SPEAKER_00Uh well, I was yes. I mean, I was I mentioned I was at the hospital there a couple weeks ago, so I oh yeah, that's a couple three weeks ago, yeah. So I put on a mask then. Um we did when were we flying last? Did we did we put a mask on when we went or came home from San Francisco? I can't remember. But I was but uh regardless of that, I was also in after my work trip to Edmonton. I wore a mask on one of those flights. I remember that. Plus, I you know was going to see my dad. That was the main reason. I was going to see my dad after oh gotcha. So I was wearing masks uh for that as well. So um, in fact, I wore a mask coming home because if you remember, we chatted after that. If you remember, I think I I did test positive for COVID.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah, I do remember that.
SPEAKER_00Or I was unsure if I did or something, you know, I can't remember back in that was back in early December. But I know I wore a mask coming back because I wasn't sure if I was sick or not. Um I had to come home. That's or normally obviously I just finished saying you stay home if you think you're sick, but I had to come home. Um you know, I was so I did wear a mask to protect other people. So um, you know, uh I'm trying to do what I what I could in that case at least. So anyway, anyway, so yes, I I there have been times even in the last say four or five months where I've had to where I found that uh I think it was smart for me to wear a mask for whatever reason.
SPEAKER_01No, I get it, and I have a mask in my pocket for work because if I get on a train and there's a fucking pack and people cough, I'll throw it on. Also, I have dumb coworkers who fucking come to work when they're sick. So if they're sick, I'll throw a mask on and I'd sit across the room. So I'm trying to not catch their plague. Yeah, but um I I fuck it, I rip them. Like, I'm like, get the fuck out of here, go sit in the giant room. I don't want to be night. Like it's just like don't get me sick. Like, I'm not here to get sick, I'm here to work and do my job.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Our our organization is pretty good. I think most people know that hey, if you're not feeling well, you should stay home because most a lot of people can work from home anyway. So that that helps. If you can work from home, um then it makes it a lot easier. And your employer has our employer has not no problem with that, right? But yeah, there are still people who show up at the office. Uh there's still the odd person who just, you know what, you shouldn't be here today, really. You know, why didn't you stay home today? And not that I've said that, but you know that they aren't necessarily feeling all that good, and you can see and hear them coughing. You know, it's like stay home, man. Stay on. That's all we have. Stay fucking home. You know you can work from home. There's no reason for you to be here today, so just stay home.
SPEAKER_01That's bullshit. Anyway. Um, I didn't have this in my prep, and I just got uh just ad-targeted for it. But are what are you using for two-factor authentication? Are you using one of those physical devices? Were you using one of those physical devices? I mean, we talked probably talked about this fucking years ago. But uh, what do you what are you using for it?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, so uh there's there's a couple different things that I use. Uh well actually there's three forms of authenticators that you can that are pretty popular now that you should be using at least one of those three. Uh I have a UB key, which is a physical key, a US physical USB key. Uh actually some of the keys uh have NFC, so you they can read that way. So basically, they uh store, well, they don't store because they don't I don't I don't know how it works. Somehow they are able to uh transfer the codes or authenticate your logins and stuff like that, right? So, anyways, there's physical hardware keys like the Yubi key. There are two-factor authentications, yeah.
SPEAKER_01So that's yeah, so that that's yeah. So I was looking, I'm getting targeted for the Yubi keys because apparently yeah, the SMS two-factor authentication is being hacked now. Yes, so a lot of companies are dropping that like hot fucking flies.
SPEAKER_00Yes, yes, it's I mean it's better than nothing, the uh email or text message. Um but uh it's certainly not the because of that, because they um um because hackers can somehow intercept uh those those codes, right? The yeah, the communication of those codes. Um yeah, so one is physical keys like the YubiKey, two is a two-factor authentication app on your on your device. Uh so I've got that for my Android phone. Uh the third now is called pass keys, which also uses your uh which also uses your mobile device, but it's it's more of a um I don't know how to best explain it, but but they are called pass keys. Uh basically you still have to log in with your password, but then you tell that particular account that uh hey, my pass key is stored on my phone in in an encrypted form, usually another app or something like that. Um uh and so basically you get an alert on your phone. It's it's it's not a text message, it's not an email, it's not uh it's basically just a device alert that says, hey, somebody's trying into your log into your account. Is this you? And then just tap yes or no if it is you. So those are called those are called pass keys.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, sure. I've never heard of that. I just googled it. It says a pass key is a secure way to sign into websites and apps without using a password. Yeah, pass keys are generated by your device and are unique to each account. Yes, and it goes how pass keys work with exactly what you said. Your device generates a public key and a private key. The key is stored on the website or app server, the key is stored on your device. When you sign in, your device authenticates your identity and combines the public and private keys to grant you access. Exactly what you just said.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. So so yeah, so that's what a lot of people are hoping for is that these pass keys. Will eventually eliminate passwords. Um, I don't know if I don't know if that will happen. I don't know how that's going to happen because you still need your uh password typically to as the first step. Because again, there's it's it's part of this multi-factor authentication, right? Pass passwords is is one part of that authentication process. So um, but yeah, they claim that somehow these passkeys are going to eliminate passwords, and and yes, I'm sure everybody probably wants that to happen at some point. Uh I think we're a long ways away from there, but anyways, so those are three different um but very secure ways that people should be securing their account, yeah, protecting their account. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Um the YubiKey is uh like the physical media that you I guess is yours on your keychain, or do you keep yours?
SPEAKER_00Well, I've got a couple of them. I do have one on my keychain. Well, yeah, yeah, because because the one on my keychain is uh does two things. It does USB, but it also has the NFC component. Oh so it does both. Uh I've got a second one for my uh for my laptop here that always because my laptop is always home or mostly always home, um it's always sitting close to my laptop here, right? So I can easily insert it, authenticate when I need to, and then and then put it aside. So um so yeah, it's yeah, it's it's it's a good conversation to have, and it's something that people need to to kind of look into. Um as you said, these other methods, while they are better than nothing, they uh are easily hacked and they're not so secure, they're not so reliable when it comes to when it comes to protecting your accounts.
SPEAKER_01And it just came into my uh I guess foresight because uh Google said they're gonna stop using the text message or the SMS two-factor authentication. Yeah, so I was like, oh fuck, well that's probably not good. So then I Googled it and I got I like Googled the Google, but then I lost track of it. And then I got ad targeted for the YubiKey. Yeah, and uh so and then what I'm looking at is like 80 bucks, it's uh YubiKey 5C NFC, whatever it is, yeah, and it has the USB C. So it's I'll keep it my keychain for my uh for my Apple device here.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah, for sure. Smart smart idea. It's I think it's a good thing to have for your most important accounts at least, anyways, right? Exactly, yeah.
SPEAKER_01No, that makes sense. Sorry for the side tangent, no tangent, but it's popped in my head, and I'm as I'm Googling stuff to talk about shit. It was here.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, well, we haven't talked about that in a long time, and it's something that uh you know we always used to chat about, you know, privacy and security, and that's something I'm always big on. Yeah. And uh always trying to stay informed and uh always trying to protect my online presence.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, you have to delete that digital footprint. Yep. Um, well, let's talk about people dying. A lot of deaths this week. Uh, you have actor Gene Hackman with his wife and his dog uh died in the home. Um, I haven't really seen anything like if it was uh like purpose. I don't think it was. It's uh it sounded like it was a carbon monoxide poisoning. Uh well they've they've actually eliminated that.
SPEAKER_00I think they eliminated that uh the gas company was there, didn't find any problems, and uh, then I think initial toxicology revealed that there wasn't it was not carbon monoxide. So uh but it's but it's weird. We're not there, so we don't know what they are investigating. Um but so far they haven't released released a lot of other information in it, but it just sounds really odd. The one thing that I read this morning is that his he he has a pacemaker, and uh they were able to determine that that pacemaker stopped working on February 17th, so they are figuring that's the day that he died. It doesn't mean that there was a problem necessarily with his pacemaker, it just means that it stopped transmitting at that time, and so that's probably the day that he died. But what happened to them and what happened to his wife, and of course, one dog. They have two other dogs, and they apparently were fine. So what what the hell's happening here? They haven't noticed any physical um physical trauma. Um I think there was medication and stuff lying around, but but again, I mean who like who knows? So uh it's it sounds really odd. It sounds really sad. It sounds really odd. Um yeah, I uh I don't know. It's it's I think it's uh something that people are really paying attention to here because he um he was a very good actor, very well known, I think very respected. He played a wide variety of roles. Um yeah, I think I think he was just really, really popular. I know he's been retired for a number of years now, but um I've always liked a lot of the movies that you know he he was he played in. Um yeah, so it's it's kind it's kind of sad. Hey, he's at this at the same time, he's uh he was what 95? Yeah. So you know, but but his wife is was quite a bit younger. I mean, so what so again 65? I think so. Does that make sense? Yeah, so again, what happened to them, right? It's just really it's really suspicious. The front door was open, but yet there was no forced entry. I mean, it's just it's just sounds so suspicious all around, and it's just like I hope they I hope they at least figure out what's what's going on here.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and another weird one was uh Michelle Tragenberg. Um she was a she was 39, she was in Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I never watched Gossip Girl, but she was in Gossip Girl, but she was in this movie called Road Trip, and Road Trip was like one of those 2000s comedies in which I remember that. I saw that fucking hilarious, yeah. Uh with a song Scotty Doesn't Know, still classic. Uh, but yeah, that sucks. And she was she died at 39. Uh, reading up on that, apparently she had a liver transplant or something, maybe about a year prior. So they think that was a big factor. But again, another one gone too soon. And then yesterday or the day before, uh, David Um the dude singer from New York dollars. Yes, he passed. Is that 75? I think it was. Is that yes? Is that it?
SPEAKER_00Yeah. So he's had cancer, he was sick for a while for sure, and some other injuries and illnesses and stuff like that. So still, like, you know what, you know what that was uh for for me, that was you know, it was pretty sad because I a big fan of the band. Um the New York Dolls were one of the initial punk bands from New York City way back in the early 70s. Um so a huge fan. That first album is just incredible. That's just and it influenced so many, so much other music that came after it. Yeah. Um I did see New York Dolls at the Plaza Club. Uh of course they had lost a couple members uh uh uh from that point, but of course, David Johansson was was there and uh touring and sounding great. Um yeah, just um yeah, just too bad. You know, of course, of course, he went on to be his uh he changed his persona. He was Buster Poindexter. People uh from a later generation probably know him more as as that person, I guess. Um he starred in some movies. He was screwed, he was the Scrooge in He was a taxi driver in this one of the Scrooge movies, uh, the one with Bill Murray. That's that was probably his biggest role, actually. That was probably you know, I know he played some other roles and was in other movies, but I think people probably remember him the most as as that. Yeah, so watch next time you're watching that movie, yeah. The taxi driver in Scrooge. Um pretty pretty popular movie for Christmas time, pretty funny show. Um yeah, so yeah, it's just just kind of sucks. That's too bad. All these people, all these artists and entertainers are getting older, right? All of these people who who we grew up with, and sure we maybe didn't know them, but uh but yeah, it's uh yeah, it's just shitty.
SPEAKER_01We're all getting impact on the world, positive impact on the world, right? And that's what what what kills you on the inside. And you know, as we're getting older, you're kind of realizing our days are getting numbered, as morbid as that sounds. Yeah, you know, like you know, I like I like it was became a reality after I got my ass kicked in the wash pit. You know, I'm just like shit, this is what old age feels like. You know, like I was like, oh man, yeah, just can't win anymore.
SPEAKER_00Um speaking of though Gene Gene Hackman, what's uh you're a big movie fan, what are what are your what's your favorite Gene Hackman movie, or at least one of them, maybe not the top number one, but what are some of uh I really enjoyed The Heartbreakers.
SPEAKER_01That's with uh Sagonia Weaver and Jennifer Love Hewitt. Uh The Mexican with Julia Roberts and Brad Pitt. Uh I I'm a big fan, big, big fan of Enemy of the State. Yeah, that was before its time, Will Smith and Gene Hackman. Like that was all about like being tracked by the government and shit. It was really good.
SPEAKER_00Surveillance and stuff, yeah.
SPEAKER_01I enjoyed that. Yeah, yeah. Again, Shorty, of course, uh with uh John Travolta. Uh I Love the Firm, uh with Mr. Tommy Cruz. Yep. And uh, of course, he was Lex Luthor in Superman. Yep. So one, two, and I think three. And what was the uh what was the um the uh western he was in with Clint? Uh Unforgiven. Unforgiven, yeah. Uh one of the best westerns of all time. Yeah. Um and of course, before my time, but can grew to respect it, young Frankenstein. Yeah, yeah, yeah, for sure. Yeah. Um, and I'm out of Gene, Gene, uh, Gene Act knowledge. That's actually not bad.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah, that's uh you did well. Those are some pretty good movies. Um you have any other ones? Yeah, what's uh what was the movie with um the courtroom drama movie with uh Why Can't I Remember It Here Now? Uh was it the firm? No, uh a different one. Um sorry, what was it? You're right, right. Runaway Jury. Yes, Runaway Jury. Yeah, so that was a good movie. Dustin Hoffman was in that. Um yeah, a bunch of yeah, it was pretty pretty good movie.
SPEAKER_01Um, what was the one with Robin Williams and him?
SPEAKER_00Uh Bird Cage, yeah. Bird Cage was good. Yeah. Uh we watched um The French Connection the other day. That's he won an Academy Award for that.
SPEAKER_01Uh probably Oh, him is uh what's his nuts? Jimmy Doyle.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, uh no, not uh not Jimmy, um Popeye. Oh Popeye Doyle. Maybe his maybe his real name was Jimmy in the role. Everybody called him Popeye. Popeye do, yeah, that's right. Uh we actually watched a movie last night called The Conversation. Uh Conversation. So that was that was pretty good. You know what? It was a little bit slow at times, but but it was directed by Francis Ford Coppola. Uh, I think it's another highly regarded film, um, quite popular or quite highly rated. Um so that was pretty good. Uh, I think you mentioned uh the other one, big ones and stuff that are probably came after all of that's all of that early stuff. Oh, he was in Bonnie and Clyde, which I I may have seen somewhere along the way, but that's that's going back to the mid late 60s, I think. I think that came out in 1967. So that's going back quite a ways. I you know, I may have seen it at one point, but I can't remember that at all. I think that's something that he was it was pretty big for him at that time too. So and I forgot to mention just looked it up.
SPEAKER_01Crimson Tide. Oh, yes, of course, yeah. Yeah, that's a fantastic movie as well.
SPEAKER_00I I love those uh uh those espionage type type movies, right? So yeah, so that was pretty good.
SPEAKER_01I always got Gene Hackman and Ed Harris mixed up.
SPEAKER_00Oh, did you? Oh wow, okay.
SPEAKER_01But I remember looking at the list when he died, I'm like, oh yeah, fuck, these are some great flicks.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. I think wasn't he also in a movie called Bat 21? Another that was another another war movie. Was it called Bat 21? I forgot about that just until now, I think. Um Bat 21, yes, Bat 21. It came out in 1988. American War drama. Yeah, that's that's a pretty good film too. So I don't I haven't seen that. Yeah, check out that one. It's been a long time, I think, uh since I've watched it, but another good good film. Well, it looks like it was based on a true story, so not that that means anything. With Danny Glover.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. You know what? I saw a quote the other day that said when Danny and Lethal Weapon 3, when Danick Lover said I'm too old for the shit, he was 38. Really? That's funny. I was like, sweet, he he gets me. I this guy, he's my spirit animal. That's funny, yeah. Oh fuck. Um I mean, we always talk about Ticketmaster and shit, but did you see the stuff about Vancouver? Um, about how uh, you know, if I was prepared, I would have it here. Um, but how the Metro City of Vancouver bloomed with 500% attendance boost since 2019 or 2019. And I'm just like, holy shit, like 500% more people attending events. And you read the article, and it doesn't, I mean it's just whatever, fuck. But like, is that why it's so hard to get tickets here in Vancouver? Is that why Ticketmaster dynamic pricing is moving up here in Vancouver? Um, I don't have the answers, but uh it's uh it sucks because as uh as as the people are attending these shows, like we're competing with more and more people all the time, and we're just getting fucked.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it's uh it's it's true. It seems like you know, and and maybe this plays a part in it at least, but it seems like uh tickets sell out real quick for a lot of the big shows, especially, right? And and again, so is it is it because of the bots and and everything scooping up the tickets, or is it because more people are just interested in going to shows now, regardless of whether or not they're more expensive? Uh the answer is probably a bit of both by the sounds of it. Yeah, I would think so. So um so again, that nine inch nails show again, for example, we keep talking about it, but but I think but I think that sold out or almost sold out fairly fairly quickly, right? Yeah. Um yes, uh Nine Inch Nails hasn't toured Vancouver in a number of years, so people are excited about it. He's a fabulous artist, and Trent is, yeah, for sure. So so it, you know, so for a lot of these things, you get why they're popular, or what why tickets sell sell quickly, at least. Um I looked at I looked at tickets again for Viagra Boys, uh, because they're they're doing initially they were doing one show in September at Malcolm Bowl. Uh I checked again yesterday that first show has sold out, and I'm sure you can get verified tickets, but regular tickets are sold out. Uh, and they've actually added a second show now. So there's two shows at Malkin Bowl for that one. Um it just seems like, yeah, things are things are I mean, I mean it's good that people are after COVID, especially. It's good that people are getting out there and having some fun and and seeing live music and supporting artists and all that sort of stuff. But but again, like what's why is that? Uh is it because of COVID? Like, are people were people tired of being shut out for two years, two plus years, you know, not being able to see shows or do anything for that matter. Yeah. Um or what? Yeah, and again, despite the increased cost of tickets, it's not stopping people from going and spending money and going out and watching these shows. So so so you know, I guess I guess it's a overall that's probably a good thing, you know. But but it makes it harder for especially when the bots start getting involved, if that's all yeah, part of it, because it it probably is. You know, that part of it makes it tough for regular fans to go to shows because it's just it makes it more expensive because the resale tickets are always more. Um, and yeah, it gets to a point where people just can't go.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it sucks. Um's were last in town in 2013. Wow.
SPEAKER_00So, yes, it's been uh it'll be 12 years. Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_01So um, are you do you have any shows lined up? Did you uh we got tickets?
SPEAKER_00We got tickets for Neil Young. So last year we had uh tickets for Crazy Horse, Neil Young and Crazy Horse. Uh of course that tour got postponed or cancelled actually. Um Neil Young now is touring with the Chrome Hearts. Is that who his touring band is? Um I'm disappointed because I was looking forward to seeing Neil with Crazy Horse. Um but anyways, we decided to get uh this is at uh Deer Deer Lake Park again. We decided to get tickets for that. It's an outdoor show. Hopefully the weather's good. It's a Saturday. Um you know, why not do it, right? So um that's all I've got tickets for. Just that show. Nothing nothing else at this point. Again, I'm I'm picking and choosing very carefully. Um that Viagra Boys show sounds interesting, um Because I haven't seen them. I you know, I had a chance to see them when they before they blew up and got so big because they are a fairly popular band now, for sure. Yeah, you know, they don't they don't play, they don't headline the big arenas, you know, but they do support some big acts. Uh and now this headlining tour that they're on is taking them because they were here not that long ago, and and uh you know they're they're yeah, they're very popular now, and their shows are selling out, so I don't know. So we'll see.
SPEAKER_01So I I I was for I saw them when they opened for Queens of the Stone Age last time.
SPEAKER_00Yes, yeah, because they opened for them. That was a couple years ago, I think. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Uh but the thing is, so the Thursday show that you're talking about that originally sold out, I just looked it up. So verified resale tickets are $130. Yeah, but the show on Wednesday you can buy a ticket for $61.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. I saw that yesterday. Like, so obviously they put these uh these verified tickets on sale. It's well, it's sold out. So people as soon as they found out it sold out, well, I'm gonna resell these tickets for double the price, right? That's what's happening. Uh, and then they put the second show on sale, I guess, and that's why there's still tickets available, they're cheap, you know, regular price, 60 bucks, as you said. Yeah, so like like, yeah, people people it just goes to show you how fucking greedy these people are, you know. It's like haha, you know, you know, maybe maybe if this second show sells out, well, okay, maybe somebody will be interested in it and pay them twice as much. But it's it just shows you how corrupt the system is and how greedy people are. Yeah, it's just yeah, it sucks. You know, it doesn't have to be that way. You know, so did you did you are you going to Neil Young?
SPEAKER_01Um, so I I've seen Neil twice. I saw Neil Young at the Commodore, yeah. Uh with my dad, and that was pretty special. And then I saw him again at Rogers Arena.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Uh at some point. So I'm actually good. I also fucking hate Deer Lake Park.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Like I hate getting there, I hate driving there, I hate getting out of there. Like it's such a pain in the ass.
SPEAKER_00So I get that.
SPEAKER_01Um I will uh I because I've seen him and I have a pretty good conscience memory of seeing him before, and I saw, you know, the the the class Heart of Gold. I saw Rockin' Through. Like I've I've seen everything I want to see, so I'm I'm actually good on that. If someone offered me a free ticket, I might I might go, but I'm not going to uh I'm not paying for it. It was what a hundred bucks to get in? 120 bucks?
SPEAKER_00120 bucks. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. So I mean that's not bad. He's he's a he's a legend. Um uh speaking of legends, you see Paul Simons coming? Oh no, I didn't see that. No. Yeah, he he's doing three shows at the Orpheum or the Queenie.
SPEAKER_00Okay.
SPEAKER_01Um, and he retired from music a while ago, but um he was on that Saturday night live 50th anniversary special, and that guy's fucking looking old. Yeah, and it's just kind of like I'm like, he can just bury like barely carry a tune. I'm just like, yeah, fuck I'm out. I'm not I'm not gonna waste the whatever legend I have in my head of him. So yeah, but I mean it's pretty cool that he's back on the road doing one last kick at the can. So yeah, uh, but uh yeah, I mean, I would love to have you seen Neil before?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I saw Neil Young and well, I saw I saw him with Crazy Horse in the early 90s. Oh, that would have been amazing. Sonic Youth opened up. Uh that was a great show. Yep, great show in Calgary. Uh, and I saw him again on his solo tour or his acoustic tour. Yeah, that was at the Queen Elizabeth Theater. Um, that was well, it would have been before COVID, but uh, but yeah, that was that was just him playing playing guitar and playing. And the harmonica and stuff, yeah. Yeah, just by himself on the stage. So that was pretty sweet. That was good. Um yeah, I was gonna say though, when you're buying tickets this time, and you know what, all artists should do this, and I don't know, you know, he's got a lot of pull, so he can he's you know he can try and do what he wants to. Yes, we're talking live nation here, and we've seen other artists try to fight Live Nation and it hasn't gone well, but he is somehow able to basically when you go to his tick when you go to his ticket page for looking for tickets, it says it says Neil, it basically says almost a message from Neil. Uh he had says something like Neil would like real fans to I don't know if he says real, but what would like fans to be able to attend his shows? Um and for if you are reselling a ticket, you cannot sell it for more than face value. Um so why and that's great, and that's great. Yeah, so why don't or can't other artists demand the same of Live Nation? That's a great question. Yeah. It's like the the Viagra Boys is is there you go. That's a perfect example. That's I mean, that's a cheaper show, right? That's a smaller show, a smaller venue, um, and and ticket prices through verified sellers are or verified resellers are twice as much as a regular standard ticket. Why? Like, why is that? Why is that allowed to happen? Because Ticketmaster is a Live Nation is just a greedy bunch of corporate assholes, that's what they are. Yeah, they really are.
SPEAKER_01But you saw this movement happen before. Like, I know Reznor took him on, Eddie Veter took him on.
SPEAKER_00Um well, Pearl Jam was the big example that I was referring to earlier.
SPEAKER_01Obviously, they tried to but they've stopped everything's done through Ticketmaster. I don't know if Ticketmaster gave him a bunch of hush money to shut the fuck up and don't do this.
SPEAKER_00I don't know.
SPEAKER_01Um Foo Fighters tried. It was remember they did that beat the bots tour.
SPEAKER_00Right.
SPEAKER_01Um, but a couple handfuls of people, but they just stopped. Everything's through Ticketmaster and shit now. Yeah. You know, I actually ended up so I bought tickets. Night and Snails are like top my top five favorite bands. Like I fucking love these guys. So I bought tickets for the Vancouver show when it's on sale, and we're gonna buy for the Seattle gig, but the Seattle gig was too expensive because like the dynamic pricing and stuff, so it was like $750 US to see the same show with the equivalent seat. So I'm like, I can't, I can't pay for this. Um so I actually bought tickets for the Seattle show off a reseller site uh because it got rid of all those Ticketmaster verified resale tickets. Because what if you go through Ticketmaster to buy tickets to whatever show and it's a verified ticket, you get charged for the ding. You get dinged on the service fees again. So they're double dipping on whatever it is, yes, which is first off, it's fucking bullshit. Second off, it's corporate greed, and third, go fuck yourself. So I I took a third-party uh site and I got you know equivalent tickets, but I didn't have to pay the extra service charge. I in fact I paid no fees for it. So I end up paying five hundred dollars Canadian to see uh to see nails again in Seattle, and I'm on the floor for the second round. So I'm gonna get my ass kicked in the pit again by the kids, but it's fully worth it.
SPEAKER_00Well, so while that's good, I guess I was i i it the cheaper to cheaper price, I guess, says that I I mean there the thing is there's probably reseller fees buried in there somewhere. Oh, but still the fact is I mean the fact is the uh the ticket is still cheaper overall, uh I guess doing it that way, but still that's I mean that's that's still more than what the standard face value ticket is, right? So Yeah. Um so I don't know. I mean I mean you you talk about I mean isn't StubHub is owned by Live Nation now, are they not? I mean or have they not have they not been all along? I actually I don't think they were initially, but yeah, isn't Stub Hub owned by Live Nation?
SPEAKER_01They well let's Google this.
SPEAKER_00I mean I I mean I don't I don't I don't know. I thought like I said, initially no, but again, because of Live Nation and who they are and how big they are, they can basically take over the competition.
SPEAKER_01Oh so it says sub StubHub is not owned by Live Nation, StubHub is privately owned.
SPEAKER_00I see, yeah. They were bought by eBay and now they're owned by a company called Via Gogo. Yeah. I see. Okay. Um interesting. Stubhub Holdings, yes, okay. I thought Live Nation was in there somewhere, but uh obviously not. You know, so so I mean, yeah, I don't know. I mean, it's I guess StubHub is still I'm always concerned about StubHub because you know you wonder if it's a real ticket or not.
SPEAKER_01I know. Well they they guarantee everything you're paying the money.
SPEAKER_00No better, they're no different than Live Nation. Because even tickets, even resale tickets, have we as we've heard even recently with uh uh Oasis. Well Oasis, and then just before that with uh Taylor Swift, you know, we know that even through Ticketmaster, those resale tickets are not necessarily real. Yeah, um, so anyways, yeah, I'm I don't know. Have I used StubHub before? Uh yeah, I probably have once or twice. I haven't used them a lot. I I really haven't. I you know, and maybe even for this nine-inch nails show I should check them out because right now tickets are just too expensive. They're all resale tickets and they're just too much money. I don't want to pay that much. So I know it's gonna be a good show, and I'm you know, I'm willing to wait until that's August, right? August 10th or something like that. I'm willing. I'm willing to wait until the summertime and see what resale or last minute, I guess, yeah, to see what's available. But but yeah, like it's just it's it's like the tickets are all 500 bucks and more, and even then you're at the back of the barn. So I don't know. It's a never-ending story though, with with uh with concerts. Again, I've been picking and choosing the prices just scare me off. We you know, we talk about more people attending shows, and that's great, but it's it's just I just don't know how some people are able to spend that kind of money. I really don't. Um yeah, it's I mean it's expensive.
SPEAKER_01It is. But fuck. Uh, but I I do want to circle back on Neil Young because we uh we talked about this off here, but Flack music and stuff. Neil Young was a huge advocate for high quality music. Do you remember that movement he had? Yeah, and everyone thought he was the fucking nuts.
SPEAKER_00Does he still not have does he he still has that website though, doesn't he? Where you can purchase directly from him. You can or yeah, yeah, yeah. So I think it's still there. I forget what it was called. Um, maybe it's even his main website, neilyoung.com, or whatever. I can't remember. I thought it was still there, but you know, because especially uh especially these other streaming companies, because again, he pulled his music from Spotify. Of course, there were other reasons for that, but I think you know, if he was trying to sell and stream his own music anyways on his own website, yeah, then who cares about you know Spotify or these other services. But um Yeah, I yeah, I don't know. I'm not sure if it's still there or not. It was it was kind of cool, it seemed, because he was the f kind of the first artist doing this sort of thing. But I don't know how much you know, I don't know how much money he made or how successful it was or anything like that. Yeah, yeah. Neil Young Archives, that's what it's called. Yeah, and I'm going there now. And yeah, they want you to looks like the first thing they want you to do before go oh it says no thanks. Okay. Yeah, so it looks like Yeah, I don't know, it's hard to tell. It's hard to tell whether or not he's selling this stuff or not.
SPEAKER_01Uh well, it says that in 2011 he tried to we trademarked uh six different trademarks. Uh SQS, studio quality sound, storage shed, and thanks for listening. The audio and video recordings feature music, artists and performance, high resolute music, high resolution music downloadable from the internet, high resolution discs, discs featuring music and video with music articles or artistic performances, pre-recorded digital media containing audio and video recordings from the featured featuring music and the artistic performances for storage and playback. Uh so but I just thought, I mean, like so when I remember when he was doing this, everyone thought he was fucking crazy. But I also remember Trent Rancher jumped on board, Dr. Dre jumped on board and tried to support him as he was moving through it. But look at it now, like you have these uh like title. You still use title a lot now, right? You're using that for your streaming.
SPEAKER_00Not not a lot, but I still use it. I I still stick with my own library for the most part, but yes, I still have a title subscription, yes.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, so that's I mean, I mean, but the high quality music there, and I think we talked about this, but I was playing with title and Apple Music, yeah, and Apple Music just works better for me because it streams and Apple's lost its quality, but it's uh it's still it sounds the exact same as in my with my ears and the test I've done. It sounds pretty identical to the title stuff, so I just stick with the Apple Music because it uses the same ecosystem that I have rocking and rolling right now. Yeah, but the fact that Neil was doing this in 2011 just showed the foresight and stuff that he was thinking about. Yeah, it's I think it's pretty cool.
SPEAKER_00And I'm looking on his site right now, and he still has this available, he still have the has these subscriptions to listen to be able to stream this high-res music. Um, and and and again, it's it's just his stuff, and of course, he's got a huge catalog, but it's it's not cheap either. Like the the cheapest is $24.99 a year, which isn't that much when you look at the streaming of other services. Of course, you can get millions of other tracks on these other services, but but it's you know, that cheapest one does still give you you know, listen listening or streaming his catalog, high-res, um, access to previously unreleased albums, songs, and videos, um live concert streams. Um like, yeah, there's a bunch of extras. Oh, high-res downloads too from our own store at MP3 prices. Oh, I see. You probably have to pay extra for some of that. Um anyways, there's there's quite a bit here. Of course, the most expensive that throws in everything uh is called the patron uh subscription. It's a hundred bucks a year. So yeah. So he still has it. Uh how how much how popular it is and how much money is he making, who knows. But um anyway. Uh obviously he still must have rights to all of his own music. Um because because you you see you like look at how many artists have sold their music, the rights to their music over the years. Like, and you like why do they do that? Like, I wonder I've always wondered why they do that. And some of them are really big artists too. Like, like didn't Springsteen sell all of his music? Um like like that's the biggest one that comes to mind. I mean, uh maybe I maybe I'm just don't understand things or didn't um like maybe I'm full of shit here, but like a lot of artists seem to sell the rights to their music.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, you're right, but I don't get that. 525 million.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, like sure. That means a lot of money in his pocket because hey, when you're dead, when you're dead, you can't like who knows what happens to all that when you're dead, right? So is it or is it because that and I don't know how these laws work. Like, do your rights even though you own the music, even though you created the music, you wrote the music, do your rights do you lose your rights after a certain period of time? Like, like look at these sites like archive.com. Do they is there a lot of old music there that is basically free now? It's all free because the rights expired. Is it and again, I'm yeah, I'm not sure. I'm not sure that I'm understanding things here uh accurately, but so that's what I'm wondering with music. Like, do your rights, even though you wrote the music again, you own the music, you you wrote the music, it belongs to you. Do your rights expire, let's say, after a hundred years? I'm just throwing a number out there. Do they automatically expire? Because you're no longer alive. You like you, you know, do is that the way the laws are set up now? I I don't know. I don't know. Um, so is so so I'm just trying to think out loud here. Is that why artists like Springsteen are selling their music? So that you know they don't give a shit about all that creative control anymore, or they don't care about the rights because they want the money while they're still alive, and then they can do whatever the hell they want with the money, right? Yeah, is that I mean it I don't know, is that what's happening here?
SPEAKER_01I I know it's you know it sounds like it. I mean, so uh looking it up, Springsteen sold his music catalog for $500 million. Yeah, uh so like that's a lot, that's a lot of change, you know. And as a a musician who's coming to his end, you know, he has all this money, so you know, one last he everyone knows that Springsteen wrote, you know, pick a song. I'm on fire, you know, The Rising, you know, pick a song. Yeah, you know, like if you know who Springsteen is, you know his legacy behind the music, so who really gives a shit? Once you've written and do it, you might as well make some money off it. If someone bought our podcast for a million dollars, fuck yeah, I'd sell it to him, you know. Um hell yeah, take the rights, take the fucking, I don't give a shit. Uh it would be a $500,000 richer each. But but looking like looking like looking into it, Queen sold their um music catalog for $1.27 billion. Wow. With a B billion dollars, Michael Jackson, $600 million, Springsteen, $500 million, Pink Floyd $400 million. Kiss, fuck Kiss, but $300 million. Uh Phil Collins with Genesis, $300 million. Bob Dylan, $300, Tina Turner, $300, Bowie, $250.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. So so so yeah, so I I I'm again I I'm not uh I'm not a business person in the music industry. I don't understand how the rights work for all this stuff, especially if rights expire after a certain point. You know, I I don't know. I mean, I mean, yes, yes, let's say let's say he Springsteen didn't sell his music and he passed away, and then so what happens to ownership at that point? Well, it goes to his family, whoever was in the will or whatever. Um, so they so I guess they then own the rights to the music, but and then they can do whatever they want, I suppose. But it's it's it's uh it's not money, I guess, at that point. Yes, it's worth a lot of money, but I guess I guess these artists just want the money in their pocket. They're a guaranteed amount of money in their pocket. Is to me, that's what it seems like it is here. I I don't know.
SPEAKER_01I agree, and you know, like I said, uh so if anyone's looking to buy a podcast, ours is for sale. Uh million dollars. Let's go. Okay.
SPEAKER_00Well, we we still we you we still get creative control. We can swear and talk about whatever the fuck we want here, and um yeah, just just pay us. But you own it. You you you own it. Uh we don't live forever, so you uh you go you take it and you market it however you want. Just I'm not yeah I'm not I'm not gonna sponsor some company either that I don't uh necessarily agree with. Uh you know, there's a there's uh what's the word here? Um you know what I mean. I'm not going to sponsor a cigarette company. That's an example. But otherwise, if you gotcha. If you want to buy us, then hey, go for it.
SPEAKER_01Alright, from buying to listening. Um let's talk music this week. I'm actually queued up, so I'm going first, damn it. You do it. Um there was a uh a haunting cover of Mr. Corey Taylor doing Dust in the Wind from the upcoming motion picture Queen of the Ring, which actually looks really awesome. Uh, but uh this this was fucking cool. Um I love this cover. Um Dust in the Wind. It really reminds me of the movie Old School, to be honest with you, because Will Ferrell sings it when Blue dies. But this is awesome. Did you uh did you enjoy this cover as much as I did?
SPEAKER_00Uh yes, yes, I did. I mean, obviously I knew that it was a cover right away. Hey, it's a classic, it's a classic song from Kansas way back in 1977. Um, so it's hey, it's a pretty cool version for sure. Corey sounds pretty good.
SPEAKER_01It sounds pretty good. I mean, Corey Corey is a one of those artists who can sing the phone book. I can say that with Dallas Green as well. That guy could sing the phone book and make it sound fantastic.
SPEAKER_00Are you uh are you familiar with that much with Kansas? Do you know I know that band goes way back before your time, but um Yeah, no.
SPEAKER_01I I know of Kansas. Um I my dad was playing it in the house when um you know when I was growing up, you know, obviously they got uh carry on my wayward son. That's their biggest song for sure. Yep. Uh Point of No Return. Yeah. Um and something about fire. Fight fire with Nuts Metallica. Um, you got like Metallica in the brain all the time. I get it. Oh shit. But uh yeah, no, Kansas great band. Steve Walsh. Steve no Steve Walsh was the drummer for that, I think.
SPEAKER_00No, he was the he was the singer, wasn't he?
SPEAKER_01Fuck it. I'm out of Kansas knowledge.
SPEAKER_00He's the singer, sure. Okay. Yeah. Yeah, yes, he was the singer for sure. Yeah. Um, yeah, yeah, classic, uh, classic prog rock band. Yeah, people people would probably categorize them as progressive rock. Um, kind of in the same, yeah, like a lot of bands obviously were at that time, right? Prog rock was pretty huge throughout the 70s. Um, lots of classic artists played a similar type music. Um, you know, even Rush, or well, Rush was always a prog rock band, but certainly uh when they came along, they came along at this kind of at the early 70s as well. It's kind of the same time. Yeah. Um Styx, Emerson Lake Palmer, like a well, geez, there's uh I obviously could go on forever and name some of these bands. So anyway, cool stuff. I listened to a lot of Kansas back back in uh back in those days. Um let's see, I'm just trying to find if I I do have some Kansas on vinyl here. These are albums, these are albums that uh were the original pressings. I can't reach way over there without ripping my headphones out. But anyway, so I've got I've got a handful of Kansas albums uh in my collection here. We can't talk about Kansas without talking about Chicago. I fucking love Chicago. You know, you know, this here's the thing about Chicago, and I know we're getting sidetracked here uh sorry about that. You know, I have never, I'll I'll be completely honest, I have never given Chicago a hey, I know I know of Chicago, I know of a lot of their popular songs, and they were very popular, especially in what the late 70s, early 80s, well, probably all through the 80s and 90s, I guess, because they put out a shit load of music. Um it was always for me, it was always whenever I hear the name of the band, it's like oh fuck, Chicago, another shitty mellow, fluffy, fluffy song, right? Because they don't really have any rockers, eh? Well, see, but here's the thing. I uh I was speaking with a buddy, uh, we're both huge music fans. Uh we both grew up together and uh listened to a lot of music, and we you know, we every time we do chat, we listen to a lot of we talk about a lot of music. He he he actually talked about some of the early Kansas, and I listened to that first Kansas album. It was a see that the first album the first album is a double LP. And it came out in what 1969, something like that. The Kansas album? Yes. That is you I listen to it, listen to it, man, because because it changed my whole thoughts process, my whole outlook of who the band is and what they are. That first that first album is just amazing, just fantastic. Like, listen to it, listen to it front to back. Again, it's a big listen. It's it's two LPs, there's a lot of music there. Um the guitar work is I forget the name of the guitarist, but he's fucking amazing. Uh, I think he did pass away somewhere along the way. I forget when he died, I forget his name. Um I'm hoping you're gonna look it up for me because I'm looking up, I'm looking up.
SPEAKER_01But he they've had like 23 guitarists because they're old as fuck. Uh uh Steve, what was the Steve? Oh, so Steve Walsh is the piano organ back lead vacuum vocals, guitar player. Uh Carrie Living Green, yeah, Rich Williams, past members, Terry K.
SPEAKER_00Or Terry Kath. Sorry, Terry Kath. Terry Kath was uh was uh the his just his guitar work is just amazing on those on those old albums. And of course their first their name of that album was uh Chicago Transit Authority. That's who they started out with. And of course they changed their name because the Transit Authority in Chicago had the same name. Um anyway, listen listen to that early stuff. Like if you so again, this is before they became really popular and with all of that pop music that most people are familiar with. Listen to that early stuff and it's just so cool. It's it sounds so good. And again, it's changed my whole impression of the band. You know, I still probably won't listen to some of their later pop stuff. Yeah, but that that early stuff is just great. Really good, really cool stuff. Anyway.
SPEAKER_01This has been Kansas talk on all many other clubs.com.
SPEAKER_00Kansas and Chicago.
SPEAKER_01Kansas and Chicago, yeah. Well, from shitty Chicago to fucking mighty machine head.
SPEAKER_00No, we're gonna talk about No, we're gonna talk about Boston next. So we're gonna go from uh Kansas to Chicago to Boston. How about that?
SPEAKER_01Well, we gotta get Earth Wind and Fire too. I'm just kidding.
SPEAKER_00No, I'm just kidding. Earth Wind and Fire isn't the name of a city or a state. Uh shit. Oh, yeah. You see what I'm doing here, right? I gotcha. Never mind. I'm out. Okay.
SPEAKER_01But can we listen to this fucking riff? Machine head. New Machine Head? Yes. Unbound. Yes. Holy shit, this song rips. When I first heard this, I started a circle pit by myself. It was awesome. Uh so Machine Head have a new 11th studio album dropping, April 25th. This is the leadoff single called Unbound. And she rips. Uh, we and you have seen Machine Head once or twice together. Yep. Uh once it was what a what a band. But uh yeah, big fan, big fan of the song. You're not really reinventing the wheel here, but it's uh quick uh three minute and fifty-seven little rager, and here we go.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, good stuff. Um that that tour is going to Kelowna, right? Is that correct? Yes. And have you got tickets for that show? Um you gotta have tickets for that show. No, I actually don't because I thought you would go see that for sure.
SPEAKER_01So I like I would love so Machine Head were here at the beginning of last year, they played the Commodore. Yep. Um, and I was at that gig, and it was it was fucking awesome. But I would love to have seen In Flames and Unearth, who are some of the opening acts, but they're both coming April 1st playing the Commodore. So I bought tickets to the show April 1st.
SPEAKER_00Okay. So they're coming without Machine Head for continuing on this way, and Machine Head is that's the end of the tour for them.
SPEAKER_01Well, it's actually like a warm-up. So they're playing warm-up stuff because the actual show starts the Machine Head, Inflames, Unearth, and Within Temptation, I think, is the band. Um They they start April the 5th. Okay, it's after the warm-up show here in Vancouver. And I'm I was thinking about this the other week. I'm like, I still don't have an Inflamed t-shirt, so I have to buy an Inflamed t-shirt. But good times, good times. Um other people are coming. New Kill Switch. Uh released an album last Friday. It's called Um The Consequence. But the full album is what you expect. It sounds like fucking Kill Switch. And it's fantastic. Um did you ever get into Kill Switch? Are you a f are you a fan?
SPEAKER_00Uh yeah, I think I well, I saw them on that tour or that show, that festival in Auburn at the White River Amphitheater. Remember, I think we talked about it. Um Kill Switch was on that. Yes, that's what it was. Yeah. Yeah. That was headlined by Slayer and Marilyn Manson, but Kill Switch was on that. Trivium was on that. Um Bullet for My Valentine was on that. Um Behemoth was on that. Behemoth was awesome. I was never I wasn't wasn't familiar with uh with those guys up until that point, and that was just such a good good show. Not uh not that I'm a huge fan of Death Metal, but uh that was a great show. Yeah. Um yeah, anyway.
SPEAKER_01But yeah, Kill Switch doing what Kill Switch do, ripping through it. Uh they're in town uh coming up. Uh I think it's uh March 19th. They're uh they're playing here.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, because all of them are doing that, actually. I noticed because Bullet from My Valentine and Trivium are on the same bill for a show later in March too, aren't they? Um yeah, it's just like uh it's a pretty busy spring for these metal bands.
SPEAKER_01Which is sick. I'm so excited. I'm not going to that bullet trivium show. I'd like to, but I just there's enough time or not enough time in the day to do that.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Uh but yeah, it's good stuff, good stuff. Um, of course, we got Mr. Zack Wilde with Black Label Society releasing a new single. There's still no word on a new album, but uh the song's called Lord Humongus. Uh standard Black Label Society. Yeah. But you know what's we really cool is that he's finally found a guitar player that is two shreds as well. The solos in the song kick ass. Um, but you know, they don't big riff, heavy guitar solos, you know, that's that's what Black Label is known for. But it's uh I I quite enjoy the song, and he always makes funny music videos.
SPEAKER_00They're in like Suba outfits and yeah, that's what uh obviously the music is great, but that yeah, that video is kind of funny.
SPEAKER_01It's kind of funny. Yeah. Uh but yeah, good times. Uh I wish that he would have he's playing with Pantera and doing all the Zach Sabbath stuff right now, but waiting for a new Black Label coming out. But he's slowly releasing singles, so I don't know if that's what he's doing or or what's happening, but yeah, here we go. And uh last one, a little bit of uh bluesy kind of number, Cassius Culper. Uh this one's so called After Me. I don't know where I found this. I just thought it was a catchy little ditty, and uh I listened to everything, and this is one of the many uh songs to listen to. It's about uh guy who's heartbroken, you know. Uh but uh good stuff. I looked this guy up a little bit. Uh he's got some other pretty decent songs, but yeah, this one's called After Me. Did you uh did you make it through this song? I did. I did no.
SPEAKER_00There's nothing there's nothing wrong with this at all. It's uh yeah, I quite enjoyed it. So you you you come up with uh you do find these uh similar bands and artists and stuff like that, and they're all very good. I just uh yeah, so it's it's kind of cool that you you do share some of this stuff as along with some good metal too, as and some other pop that I just won't comment on any further.
SPEAKER_01Don't forget the rap music, don't forget the rap music.
SPEAKER_00Oh, yes, I forgot about that too.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, uh, but yes, as always, you can find the picks of the week. Steven does a great job updating our webpage. Please check it out, oldmenheellclouds.com. I actually got feedback for our episode last week, uh or last two weeks ago, that your picks of the week weren't there. So uh there was a technical uh issue on our end that part, so we had to cut it. But please, I know you had a bunch, so post those along with this week, along with your picks. Um to ingest over the next couple weeks before we chat with you again. But uh sure. Well no, go ahead. Didn't mean to cut you. Those are yeah, those are mine. Uh what do you spin in this week?
SPEAKER_00Well, well, yes, uh, I wasn't gonna mention it because hey, I don't like fucking up, but yeah, there was a bit of a fuck up with my recording there last week. That's why my tunes uh you know what? It's good that people are listening and it's good that people we're getting some feedback. So so at least we're not doing this for nothing, right? At least you and I, instead of just you and I, I mean I like chatting with you and it's always nice, but hey, it's good to hear some people are listening once in a while. And and of course the big part of our show is the music. So if if people are hopefully um not inspired, but what's you know, if people are if people are only here for the music part of it, then that's cool, but I mean that's okay. Yeah, because I know I know we rant and bullshit and I swear too much and otherwise. But uh the music is what keeps us going uh not only here but hey, just in life, right?
SPEAKER_01It's true. And I only have friends who just skip to the music part. Okay, okay. At least we're getting a play, you know. Exactly. Thank you for that. Yeah, thank you very much.
SPEAKER_00That's what counts. Exactly, exactly. Alright, let me kick this off though. Oh, so I I am carrying over some stuff from uh from from last week since we missed it, but I've got some other new tunes here. This this first one, can you hear that? So it's just getting started here, but uh you can hear me, right? I hope.
SPEAKER_01I can hear you, I can hear that. I can hear you. Okay, excellent.
SPEAKER_00Anyway, alright, this this is this is a new tune from uh Dream Theater. This is the Midnight Messiah off their their new album. Um let me just move ahead here where it really kicks in. Uh if I could find it. You know, I've always got so many windows open. I just can't uh how many tabs?
SPEAKER_01What's the tabs?
SPEAKER_00Well, I've got I've got like I've got six or seven windows open and then a whole shitload of tabs on top of that. So uh so fucked. Anyway. Here we go. Dream Theater. Uh I have, I'll be honest, I have not, I'm not very familiar with Dream Theater. I've not listened to them a lot in the past. Uh I no reason for that, I guess. You just can't, like you said, there's only so much time in the day. But this is such a cool song. I don't know where I first heard this. Maybe it was title. Um actually it probably was title. Uh this is a great song. I just I'm going to check out the rest of the album, and of course, I'm going to listen to a lot uh of their earlier stuff as well. But a cool tune.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, no, it's it's really cool. Big fat.
SPEAKER_00You are, yeah, yeah. You uh it sounds like you maybe haven't uh listened to them much or you haven't thought of too much of their music in the in the past, their earlier stuff, but have you seen them?
SPEAKER_01I don't know. I've saw I saw them once, uh Danger and I for the metal shop, they came to Vancouver and played the Commodore, and we were uh the music ambassadors for that show. So we uh introduced them, we introduced the opening band who I forget. Uh but um no, we saw them and interviewed uh Mike Porton. Mike Porton? Dummy Portney, yeah. He was Fortney. Yeah. Um we I talked to him, he was the amazing, amazing drummer, and getting a chance to talk to him was super cool. Uh kind of fell off the Dream Theater wagon a little bit, but this might bring me back on. Yeah. And uh when we went down to see the Deftones in Seattle, I told the Border Guard, we're going down for the metal show. And he goes, Oh, Dream Theater? I'm like, no Deftones. And he goes, Oh, that'll be good too. So yeah, Dream Theater playing Neptune the same night their Deftones were playing the Climate Flip. So that that I thought that was cool. But uh yeah, I'm not uh, you know, was uh not the biggest Dream Theater fan, but uh I can certainly respect what they do, and I'm gonna check it out because that for that guitar main guitar riff in this song fucking rips.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah. It's a it's a good good song. It's it it is a little bit longer, maybe. Um like how many minutes about an eight-minute song, I guess. Uh but yeah, it's a the the solos, just the riffs, uh it's just a great tune. I I really enjoy that right from the first time I saw it. Uh next tune is um that was new on my list this week. This one is also new, although this one I've I've listened to you know probably a month ago or something like that when it first came out. This is uh Joe Bonamassa with uh with Sammy Hager. Yes, and this is this is such a uh a great song. Um I don't know, it sounds like this is just kind of a one-off. Um but but it's such a good tune. It's you know everybody knows Sammy Hager. Um going back to Montrose and his solo career, and of course Van Halen now is his uh solo stuff again. Um I just Sammy Hager is great, but I've never you know I have another buddy who who you know every time we talk about music, he brings up Joe Bonamaso. He's such a big fan. And um, I've always meant to get to him and listen to more stuff, and he he's a great guitarist himself, and he's you know, I think the stuff I have listened to, it's you know, pretty good, pretty good music there, but I I've still never really sat down and say, hey, today I'm gonna listen to some Joe Bonhomaso. Uh but I think that's gonna change. I think it's he's got some every time I hear his music, it's great. And so I think I just need to he's got a lot of music too, so maybe that's part of it. I don't know where to start, but but yeah. Anyway, some good stuff, Joe Bonamassa. This is a tune called Fortune Teller Blues. Uh this is rad. Yeah, good good stuff for sure. Um alright, next on the list. This is another new one this week, and I think I've played some music from uh Kel L in the past. That's that's the name of the band, Kel L. Um stopped. Alright, so where's Kel L? Where's my volume? Um here we go. Um this is this is just good good desert stoner rock, whatever the hell you want to call it. It's just good, heavy psychedelic, uh psychedelic rock. These guys are from Norway. Uh this is uh also a new album coming out. Uh it's called Astral Voyager Volume 1. It's supposed to be out in May. Uh the name of the track is DTDSC. They actually call the track that, but it's short short for Black Train Deep Space Caravan. But but watch the Vizda video, man. It's like some cheesy sci-fi stuff from the late 60s or something like that. It's uh it's it's it's pretty funny. It's a good tune, but a pretty funny video, and uh I don't know who comes up with this shit, this uh visual stuff, but it hey, I'm not complaining, it's pretty cool. Yeah, so yeah, good track. Good stuff. I always say this, but there's something in this, these Scandinavians that uh they just always come out with this great heavy music, man. And I just every time I see that a band is from somewhere Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland, even Iceland, some of the music from Iceland that I've been listening to lately. It's just it's so good. It's just so heavy. There's something in the water over there, I think. I don't know what it is.
SPEAKER_01So no, this is good stuff. You've sure you've played these guys before, and I actually went and looked this catalog up because I was like, oh, these guys kick ass.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Cool, right on. Alright. Uh this but this was on my list last week that I tried to play, and uh it's a band that I have also played before, too. It's called uh Pagan Altar. Uh this this is a like a new wave of British heavy metal band from from the late 70s that like they go back quite a long way. Uh it was formed by somebody named Terry, and I forgot his name last week as well. Terry Jones. Sorry, Terry, so Terry Jones was uh one of the original members. He passed away um a little while ago. Um but but but it but it sounds like he still plays a big part in this new album. His son has take kind of taken the band forward. Um Terry wrote uh I think a lot of the music that we're still hearing in this new album, so he kind of lives on through the music. Uh this is a song called The Dead's Last March. Yeah, the new album is out I don't know when it's coming out. It's pretty soon though. Uh April 25th, so she's coming. This is good Doom Metal Man. 12, it's Doom Heavy Metal. It's uh it's pretty cool stuff. So I'm looking forward to hearing the rest of the album.
SPEAKER_01You know, when I was listening to the tunes this morning, I put this on as I was reading all the fucking shit you were talking about, and I thought it was Black Sabbath. I'm like, uh I've never heard the Sabbath song before. And it wasn't, but uh, you know, it kind of has the same sort of vibe.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it does. It's it's yeah, it's that same heavy British metal for sure.
SPEAKER_01It's it's it was great, great track, great song.
SPEAKER_00Cool stuff. Uh, I think the last couple of songs, I'll go through them real quick uh because I did try and play them last week too. This uh this Jimmy Page Black Crow stuff, uh which I'm really excited about. Uh they are reissuing uh this concert uh live at the Greek. I think this first came out in 1999. Uh I have a copy on CD from the Music Maker, I think it's Music Maker something. It was a special release at that time, a special limited release, because I don't even know that they were planning a full regular release at that point. Uh so I do have a copy of this on single CD. They are they are reissuing this. Uh, I think it comes out next week. They are reissuing it. Um, I think it's three CDs, six LPs. Um, there's like 16 unreleased songs or something like that from the show. It's it's gonna be amazing. So it's all it's Jimmy Page with the Black Crows, live at the Greek in Los Angeles, 1999. Um, doing Black Crows and Led Zeppelins uh Led Zeppelin tunes, and Paige is such a perfect fit for this music, for all of this music, like the Black Crow stuff, and he just sounds so good. I mean, all this early Black Crows music is awesome. Um anyway, so I'm excited. This is one of the unreleased tracks. Um, this is from the Black Crow second album. Um just great stuff. Like just you can just listen to the guitars and you can hear Paige in there, you can tell he's he's having a lot of fun back there doing this stuff, so um, yeah. So good stuff, good stuff. I've actually ordered this uh pre-order, this uh the six LP box set, so I'm looking forward to it.
SPEAKER_01Oh awesome. Yeah. Is it cool? Is that like splatter vinyl or anything?
SPEAKER_00Uh no, it's the it's black vinyl. Uh black crows, I guess. So fits right in, I guess. Yeah. I don't there may be a limited edition 2 LP set that that is maybe colored vinyl. I can't remember. But hey, I wanted the works, man, because I like I said, I bought this right from the start. It was it's fantastic stuff, it's a great performance. Uh so I'm really looking forward to hearing the other songs uh that weren't a part of the uh release a long time ago. So yeah, that's awesome. Should be cool. Uh last one is an old uh I I might start just digging back and looking for some of these old tunes that uh maybe that I still listen to actually. They were like they're older bands, older music, older performances, whatever it might be. Uh I loved them back then and I still love them today. So this is um this is Grey Kin, uh way back in 1981. He's uh get some volume happening here. He's doing a song called uh Can't Stop Hurting Myself, a live performance. Um I love Grey Kin, man. This uh I saw him back in probably back I don't know if I saw this particular tour necessarily, but I saw them back in the early 80s. And uh oh, come on, there we go. Uh he may have opened for journey. I can't remember. I saw a journey a couple times back in the early 80s. Actually, the first I never told this before. I think the first time I saw a journey 1979 in Honolulu.
SPEAKER_01Oh wow, and in fucking Hawaii?
SPEAKER_00In Hawaii. I saw it saw Journey back then. Um I saw them with my sister. So shit, we were still young, man. We were I was still how old was I? I was I would have been 15, I think. 14 or 15. I saw them in Hawaii. My sister was younger than me. Uh I don't know how I was able to drag her to a show, I guess, because we didn't go with our parents. Yeah. Um yeah, so Saw Journey back then, and then I saw them again in the early 80s in Calgary, and I think I think Greg can open. So um uh so really cool stuff. I love that song, man. And I've got that the one of the original pressings with that song on it in my library here, too. So cool stuff.
SPEAKER_01So that song was in the Life of the Country Club in 1981. That's right. I wasn't even fucking born yet. Scary. Yes. I was a year after that. So that song is 43 years old.
SPEAKER_00And I was old enough to go to that show. Actually, in 1981, I was well, I hadn't graduated from high school yet, but uh yeah, so obviously I'm dating myself. I'm an old fucker, and uh but that's good stuff. I yeah.
SPEAKER_01Oh man, no, I respect that, man. That was uh that was a cool song. Listening to it this morning, I was quite surprised. And I'm also happy it wasn't fucking twenty three minutes long.
SPEAKER_00So just one song under five minutes. Uh Grey King passed away last year or two. Um so yeah, that was yeah, another one I don't Know how old he was, but another one gone too soon.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, shit. I was gonna say is that uh Jimmy Page and the Black Clothes stuff from uh coming on Record Store Day, but Record Store Day, I had to look it up, is an April. It's April, yeah. Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_00So yeah, I think I think this is out next week, as far as I know. That uh uh that new that new release or new uh March 14th, yes. Ships on oh ships on March 14th. I assume that's is that a regular release day? I uh I mean who knows? I have no idea. Something like that. Yeah. Is it Friday? Uh March 14th is a third. It is a Friday, yeah. It is a Friday. Okay, yeah, there we go. So I'll look at it looking forward to that. Looking it should be good. Cool.
SPEAKER_01Uh correct my record store day is uh April 12th.
SPEAKER_00Yes. Uh and there was uh I've already looked at the list too. There were a couple things that kind of caught my eye, and I can't remember what they might be.
SPEAKER_01But um there's a Black Sabbath on there, the Eternal Idol.
SPEAKER_00That's a really translucent vinyl. Yeah, yeah, that's uh that's on there. Um yeah, there was something else. That that one that one definitely caught my eye too.
SPEAKER_01So um yeah, fuck. Um uh let's talk movies super quick. Uh, I only watched one show this week. I watched a movie called The Gorge. Um, it has Miles Teller in it and uh some hot girl. And I figured Anna Love Joy, Anna Joy Love.
SPEAKER_00Um I know who you're talking about.
SPEAKER_01Anna Taylor Joy. Uh that was it was actually super awesome. Kind of sci-fi uh protection. The the um the soundtrack is done by Trent Rezn, Atticus Ross. Uh super cool watch. Definitely give that a give that a watch. But that's the only one I watched this week. Uh, what have you been watching this week? So so real quick, she was in um Um Queen's Gambit. She was in Dune, and she was in um Yeah, but she was in the latest Mad Max movie, Furiosa.
SPEAKER_00Yes, Furiosa. Um, but she was also in the later episodes of um uh Irish. What's the Irish movie that everybody talks about? Uh 1920s, 30s, uh fuck uh Peaky Blinders. She was in Peaky Blinders. I I I hated her in that series. I don't know why. I just I couldn't stand her in that series. I just um not not that the acting was bad or anything. I well maybe it was at that point. It was more just her character. I hated her character in that yeah in that series. Yeah, it's really uh yeah. Anyway. Um what am I watching? What am I watching? Did I I don't know that we watched any movies. We haven't we haven't watched a lot of movies other than that um uh Gene Hackman film. Well the last two, we yeah, we watched uh um French Connection and the Fuck, whatever that is. See, I'm losing it. I've I've also lost it. The No, it starts with a C. Oh fuck. Anyway, you know what? Gene Hackman? Gene Hackman starts with a C. I just I talked about it earlier, like an hour ago, two hours ago. Crimson Tide. Crimson Tide? No, no, not Crimson Tide. The Conversation. Fuck, there it is. Conversation uh okay, got it. Uh other than those two movies, we haven't watched a lot. We did start watching the Tragically Hip um documentary. The it's a four-part four-part documentary. Uh I I probably have said before that I'm not the biggest tragically hip fan, because it really I'm not. I I uh I've I failed at that time at least I failed to see what uh everybody else saw in them being so popular. Like it's not that the music is bad, it's just that why is every why is every single Canadian going fucking crazy over this band? And and and again, it it's nothing nothing personal, nothing, you know, it's not bad music, it's just like okay, it's good music, but it's not the fucking greatest fucking music in the world, which is the way a lot of people carry on. So anyway. Um Gore Downey obviously is is a very was a very talented musician. Uh, we met him, or I at least I met him at C Fox at least once, anyways. Uh very quiet, very humble guy, very nice guy. Um, obviously, he does write great music. Uh, he's a big uh proponent and uh supporter of indigenous people. He's a Boston Bruins fan. Well, he was a Boston Bruins fan. You know what? One thing I didn't know, his brother, I think his brother's name is Patrick. Is that I think it's Patrick. Uh yeah, his brother. Um I don't think he still does, but he did play all the music at TD Garden in Boston. I didn't know that. I didn't know that. I I think that's true. I I think I heard that right. Um, so anyway, anyway, that's really cool. We started watching that. We've only got the first episode uh under our belt, but uh, but pretty cool. Uh a couple other things. Paradise is finishing up uh the shield I've talked about before, that cop show that's kind of ahead of its time. Pretty good. We're in season four. Yellow jackets is ongoing. That's a fucked up show, man. It's I mentioned I mentioned that last time. It's fucked up. That lay latest episode is even more crazy. It's like um it's it's it's kind of getting out there. I hope, I hope it's not taking a turn for the worse. Uh we'll have to see. We'll have to see what happens with this next episode. But uh women, women of the I like these foreign documentaries, or not documentaries, I like these foreign TV shows. I don't mind subtitles. I know some people hate subtitles. Uh, some of these foreign uh crime shows and um suspense thriller shows, there's a ton of them out there. Uh, some of them are really good. We've just started one from Germany called Woman of the Dead. Uh, it's kind of so-so. I'm not so sure where we're going with that one yet. Another one called Trapped. Trapped is from Iceland. There's some cool stuff from Iceland, man. I mean, I know we were there, but even before we went to visit it, uh, some good music out of Iceland, uh, some good TVs out of Iceland as well. This one's called Trapped Season 2. I'm into that. It's really good. Um, yeah, it's just trying to expand my horizons, trying to avoid US-made and produced content. That's another thing. Yeah, actually, great idea to do it. Yeah, actually, no, I'm not doing that on purpose, or at least I wasn't doing that on purpose. But now it's like, okay, and again, it's got nothing to do with the I'm not gonna stop listening to music that comes from the United States. I'm not gonna stop watching film that comes out of Hollywood. Um, but hey, there is so much the thing is there's so much more out there, right? Than um trying to expand my horizons.
SPEAKER_01You know, and I'm grateful for it because I get to share and get to hear all the stuff, and maybe I'll even watch one of these shows one of these days.
