Welcome, Thanksgiving, And Support
AdamLicking your freezer clean might be more productive than that, but at least they both love heavy metal. Here are The Old Men, Adam and Stephen. Welcome out to it. This is the Old Men Who Yell at Clouds podcast, when we get together to talk about the things that matter to us. We're episode number 165. As we record is Monday, October 12th. It's approximately 11 a.m. and we are podcasting live out of Vancouver, British Columbia.
StephenHello. Hello, everyone. Happy Thanksgiving, man. Happy Thanksgiving to everybody else, too.
AdamWell, for if we're going there, uh happy birthday to you, sir.
StephenWow. Well, thank you very much. Thank you. It's uh it's a big day all around, right? So...
AdamYes, it is. Yes it is.
StephenUm, we do honour and acknowledge that we joined you today from the traditional ancestral and unceded territory of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh Nations.
AdamYou know it's uh my name is Adam, and the birthday boy is Stephen. Hello, Stephen.
StephenHi, Adam. How's it going, man?
AdamIt's going pretty alright. Before we get into things that have happened in the last in the last couple weeks, uh, you can support our podcast by hitting our website, the oldmen.ca, and subscribing to our podcast. If you want to help us out, you can head over and buy us a coffee. Please buy us a coffee. Please, please buy us a coffee.
StephenOr just send us some money, damn it. Come on. Come on. Be in touch and we'll give you our uh we'll give you our uh addresses. You can just fire us uh fire us some some cash.
AdamI think transfer?
StephenYes, exactly.
AdamBut you know, cash is better because it's untraceable.
StephenWell, there you go. There you go.
AdamBut I don't know.
StephenWe'll have to we'll have to arrange for pickup and stuff like that, right?
AdamSo we'll do a drive-by. Okay, well let's
Can You Refreeze A Turkey
Adamdo it.
StephenAdam
So it's uh it's it's Thanksgiving or today, and it was also your birthday. So what are you doing to celebrate besides gracing us with your presence today?
StephenUh that's it, man. You know, that's the highlight of the day, I think, for me. Because uh I we have no plans. Yeah, I mean, I shouldn't say that. We we you know, we did a few things over the weekend. Well, no, we didn't do that much, but we hung out and walked around, did some stuff, nothing too exciting. Tonight we're gonna do some dinner here at home. It's my birthday and I'm still cooking dinner. Like, damn it. What's wrong with that? Hey, something's wrong here.
AdamUh is it a Thanksgiving dinner kind of theme, or are you doing a turkey, turkey loaf?
StephenUh we got a turkey. I bought a turkey breast. Uh, here here's a here's a question for you. The chef that you are. Okay. Um, so I bought a turkey breast uh last week sometime. There were some turkey breasts that were um that were previously frozen, they were marked previously frozen, and of course they were in the regular meat counter unthawed. And then uh so some previously unfrozen, some fresh. So I was looking through them. I purposely well, I wanted to pick one that was not previously frozen, and I was rummaging through all the all of the different uh packages, and I just I grabbed one and I got home, I threw it in the I threw it in the freezer. Anyways, it turns out I froze it again. So so basically it was previously frozen, it unthawed for a short time, and then I threw it back in the freezer again. Now I had always heard that freezing meat again, uncooked meat again, is not right. What is your expertise on this uh subject matter?
AdamSo if you went to the store, picked up the frozen meat, came home, and put it back in the freezer, yeah, like within within 30-ish minutes, you're okay.
StephenOh no, no, no, it wasn't 30-ish minutes, it was probably completely unthawed at that point.
AdamOh, yeah.
StephenSo but I but I but I brought it home. I brought it was it was it was frozen at the store, it was unthawed at the store in the counter, probably for a day, I I'm guessing, and then I got home and I threw it back in the freezer again. Is that a no-no?
AdamUh I I think that might be a no-no. Fuck um everybody's body is different, and having gone through a lot of food poisoning in the last fucking three years, um, I would did a bunch of reading on a bunch of stuff. Yep. And uh it just kind of depends on what you're doing with it. Obviously, you're cooking it. Is it plain? Are you cooking it in a sauce? What do you what are you doing with it?
StephenI'm just gonna roast it in the oven. That's yeah, roasting it in the oven.
AdamYeah, it's um yeah, fuck. I I don't I don't know. Uh you're more hardcore than I am, so you're somebody can probably handle it. Uh but uh yeah, I stay away from previously like if you go to the store and you buy a piece of meat that's been frozen from there and unthawed, you buy, you come home and cook it, you're fine. But if you go home and it's still frozen as fuck and you throw it back in the freezer, you're fine. But if it's unthawed completely and then you re-freeze it, it's that refreezing from that warm that fucks you again, because whatever, like yeah. Uh but anyways, I fuck just go for it and see what happens. You might call in for food point. You might be able to share some puking and shitting stories.
StephenI like you did, uh or like you have before. Oh my god. Oh my fucking god. Well, that's not really how I want to celebrate my birthday, but um sure I'll tell you about it if it happens. Okay, well, that's that's uh you know, if if uh I I think we're gonna take a chance and hopefully we're we're fine. See, it's not like I'm not worried about food poisoning per se. I guess I'm because it was never warm, it was always cool, it was always refrigerated, right? So yeah, it's I've been doing some reading, and it's I don't know, there's it's it has something to do with the moisture content or something like that. Uh something, I don't know what it is. It it fucks with the meat somehow and and the enzymes or some shit. Yeah, and I just don't know that it will taste the same. I think that's my my biggest concern and the biggest problem overall. I don't think it's a problem getting sick necessarily, but hey, I don't know. So I thought I'd ask the expert. Um what you could do is like how much does a turkey breast cost? Well, this was about 23 bucks or something, so it's not based some big massive jerky that cost me 50, 60, 70 bucks, but I mean what you could you could do is just go buy another one and then boil the fucking shit out of this one you just bought and give it to the cats. Yeah, and then they fucking die.
AdamThat'll be that'll be really hardcore than both of us.
StephenThey their guts are stronger than ours, that's for sure. I mean, they they eat raw meat as it is already, so um yeah, so it's yeah, who knows? Well, you know what? You know what? Maybe maybe I'm just gonna fucking end up starving on my birthday and and Thanksgiving. And uh are you okay? Blink twice if you're in trouble.
AdamYeah. Anyway. Oh shit. Well, well, I hope that you don't die on your birthday. If you do, um thank you very much for everything you've done. You're you're welcome, man. Nice knowing you. You'll be just fine. Um, yeah, but so but you also got the uh the partner to worry about, so hopefully she's okay. Oh yeah, you poison me.
StephenYeah, really. I'll be I'll be divorced by the next time I talk to you. So she I'll be living on the streets, and uh I'll be talking to you on my phone somehow because I don't have my laptop or whatever. So anyway. Okay, no, it should be should be fine. Uh I don't know. I'm I think I'm gonna take a chance and we'll see what happens.
AdamSee what happens, see what happens. Uh, I'll put that in our follow-up for next five best. You can let me know how you did. Definitely gotta remember that for sure. Or if uh we reach out to record again, what's going on? I'm I'm sick as fuck. Okay, yeah, obviously that didn't work out. Yeah. Oh well. Learn the hard way. Um, okay, so you're making dinner on your birthday. Yep. Um, you know, when you sent me your prep this morning, it was all fucked. So I don't know. Did you start your scream fest this year?
31 Days Of Horror Watchlist
AdamAre you ripping through your 31 days of horror?
StephenYeah, and sorry about the prep. I'm trying to do something different, and uh, well, it doesn't sound like it turned out uh all that well. It's just a text. I thought it was a text file that I exported to you, but whatever. Uh open, it's just all garbled. Oh, okay. That's not good. Um, yes, I've started my 31 days of horror. Uh I'm not doing so well. Um, I I always have I always have lots to watch, so that's for sure. I started list, but then I just kind of wing it. I never stick to the list. And anyways, I've got what uh one, two, three, four, five, six. I've watched eight movies so far. Um, a couple I've seen before, but uh actually only well, yeah, two of them I've seen before. So uh, but yeah, I mean hockey started again. We've got baseball playoffs going on. I've been busy as fuck. Uh there's lots going on in life. So uh I know it's only the 12th, but I'm already behind here. So and I usually start early too. That's the thing. I usually start late September. I've only got eight movies done. Um, plus we've got our regular TV shows that we typically watch or stay up to date with on latest releases. So anyway, anyway, uh I'll I'll I'll post the list with uh with our episode um info and stuff like that on Buzz Sprout, but uh let's see. I've Apocalypse Z, like Apocalypse Apocalypse Z, whatever it is, the beginning of the end. It came out a couple years ago. Did you see that? It's it's actually not too bad of a movie. I didn't mind that show at all. And there's a sequel coming out this year, so um, so that was that was okay. Um, I watched uh The Fog in Dolby Vision. That's such a great movie. The original Fog 1980. Yeah, just a classic um John Carpenter film. Uh some kind of you know, some cool acting and actors, actresses in this in this film, and it's just really well done. I know it's like what 5 45 years old. How old is it now? 46 years old. Like, holy shit. It's and it's and it's and I think it stood the test of time really well. I think it's um I think it's pretty good. Yeah. Anyways, I really I really enjoyed it. Uh of course we watched Poltergeist. Those were the two films that I had seen before. Um Obsession was uh it's a new film from this year. Obsession was a Obsession is a really fucked up movie. Uh it's like it's like it's like holy, holy shit. It's just yeah, it's a really weird movie, but yeah, it's it's it's pretty good. It's well done. Okay, yeah, so check it out. And then two I'll talk about two Italian movies. Uh, what's the uh producer's name? He well, he's a producer director. I don't think he directed these films. Uh Dario, oh what the fuck? I forget his name now. Dario, anyways, some Italian dude, uh, really renowned for some of the horror films that he's done. Uh, these are called Demons and Demons 2. Uh so basically some horror demon movies. Uh Demons, the first one was really good. Demons 2 kind of sucked. I just watched it last night. It was pretty, pretty hokey. I don't know. It was it was entertaining, but uh yeah, so that's where I'm at with my 31 days of horror, my horror fest. Uh, I'll certainly try and continue the rest of the month here. I mean, I watch horror movies no matter what time of year it is, but it's kind of a cool special month, I guess, where I can try and watch as many as I can.
AdamUm, I started watching, since we're talking about horror, we started watching the new Carrie TV show. Oh, yes, yes, how is it? Um, so it's it's pretty cool. It's all shot here in Vancouver. Um, they do a nod to the Army of Darkness, which is fucking super cool. Cool. Um, so big fan of that. Saw that Easter egg right away, explained it to the girlfriend. She had no idea what the fuck I was talking about. I'm fucking smart. Uh fuck that, anyways. Um, and she's a big we're a big scream guy. So we've actually started we watched like Scream 1, 2, and 3, which is kind of on the background. Uh, right on. Um, but uh, I'm not as hardcore as you are, but um uh there's that other show in theatres right now called Other Mommy, yeah, with uh Jessica's Chastain that looks like um I saw a trailer for the new Exorcist with Scarlett Johansson coming out. Yep. Um, but that's about it on my horror kind of list right now. Obsession's on there still, because that looks it looks cool. I gotta still watch Smile 2.
StephenUm Smile One and Two are on my list. Uh I have not seen either one of those, so those look really good.
AdamUh sorry? Oh shit. I was I watched Smile and then I was at work the other day, and I kind of walked by people smiling. I'm like, oh fuck.
StephenYeah, that was that was good times. There's um there's another series coming out at the end of the month. It's called Crystal Lake. Uh it's it's basically I think it's I think it's sort of a prequel to of course the Friday the 13th movies, but it's um yeah, I don't know what to think of it. I I guess I'll I'll check it out, of course. I'll I'll definitely definitely watch it. But uh yeah, it's uh yeah, it's funny how we've got these remakes and prequels and like all of this these things are based on these old films like Carrie and Friday the 13th and um yeah, some of the other shows like Cape Fear, that TV series Cape Fear, of course, based on the based on the old movies, um yeah, a bunch of stuff like that. Um it's interesting. I don't know if it always works, but it's interesting how these uh writers, directors, you know, producers and stuff kind of revisit all of this old stuff.
AdamIt's awesome. Yeah. Um so what's gonna go on?
Iceland Highlights And Lagoon Injuries
AdamI recently came back from Iceland, which you have visited. Yes. Tell me about it, please, and let me know what like Iceland. How is it? It was it's it's a fucking magical place. I everyone's like, what is the takeaway from Iceland? I'm like, it's fucking earth. You look everywhere, there's mountains and waterfalls and like green moss, shit, and forests and everything. Like it's it is just absolutely mind-boggling how beautiful and gorgeous it is. Expensive as fuck, yes. But um I'm gonna sell see if you can open this on your phone. I forgot to include it in my prep because I sent this to you at three in the morning. Uh, but um let's see if you can open this. Um, so we hit the ground running right when we got there. Um, we took a five o'clock flight to um from Vancouver to Reykjavik right away. So when we landed, it was a seven-hour flight. When we landed, it was uh 9 a.m. their time, so we pretty much hit the ground running. Uh we went straight to the Blue Lagoon. Um we they welcomed us with a walk in and we paid for a packet, so they give you a beer and uh you float around the Blue Lagoon, and then we were exploring Reykjavik. We found this bookstore that has a live band playing in it. It was a little cover band, but they're actually really pretty cool.
StephenIs that sorry, I have to ask, but is that just off the main drag? Um I forget the name of it. Um we stayed, I think I think I know what you're talking about, and we stayed right across the street from that. Yeah, that's it. Or right across the alley. Yep. Yeah, I know what it is. I know which one you're talking about. Oh, yeah, I'm looking at your photos here now, too. So yeah, I'm pretty sure that's the place. Yep.
AdamYep. Great spots. Um awesome. Uh yeah, so we did that, did that, and then the the church and right if it's cool. That's it. We went to that national park where I was stood between two tectonic plates. Yep. Yeah, yeah. I mean, that's great. This scenery was cool. Saw the geyser dude, it's geyser thing, the 400 degrees water just randomly explodes. Yeah. Uh so every waterfall you could actually possibly imagine. The coolest one and the most epic one was that glove gulfoss. I think it kind of is like multiple tiers of it. It's just glorious.
StephenAll of that stuff we've we saw for sure. Yeah, that's on the circle, the golden circle tour, all of those things. The the where the plates meet, uh, that's the the um the geyser and the that waterfall you're talking about. Uh sounds like you did a lot more, obviously. Now I'm looking and I'm looking at your photos, and yeah. So, anyways, please carry on.
AdamUh, we slept in an igloo overnight. Uh hope trying to see the northern lights. We were unsuccessful every night. We've tried to see that, so that kind of sucks. Yeah. Um, we rented ATVs, we did a uh uh a private tour of the Black Sand Beach, which was cool to see the plane wreck. Um, what else did we do? We went to Diamond Beach. We actually had a bunch of fucking glacier chunks onset thing. Uh, on one of the slides, you'll see like the girlfriend perfectly framed within like this glacier. It looks really influency, so I'm really stoked about that. Um, we saw a Viking cave with uh just a bunch of more viewpoints. Um and it was cool. We found a metal bar called Lemmy. Yes, I've heard of it. Uh obviously we didn't go, but I've heard of it. Uh we got nice and drunk, they had 50 beers on tap. Like it was just uh just punishing. Excellent. And then we went to uh to end the trip, we went to Sky Lagoon. Yes, uh different lagoon spot. I loved it way better than Blue Lagoon. Um, but uh lagoon people is not like a natural hot spring, it's like this uh like it's like a swimming pool, but it's all like calm and zen, and there's like a seven-step ritual and stuff. Yeah, and when I was walking through said lagoon, like there's benches and stuff that aren't marked, and I fucking smoked a bench. Oh no, and like I stud my toes so fucking bad, like my nail was hanging on by a thread. So I'm like, fuck sakes. And also at Blue Lagoon, I cut myself at the bottom of the pool. Oh wow, because it's it's all like so. I injured myself at both tranquil spots, fucking place. Um, so I'm talking to the guy and he's like, Oh yeah, this happens about three times a day. I'm like, Well, why don't you fucking mark the benches? And I I was so fucking mad because now like my toe is not broken. I went to the clinic right when I got back, like just keep it bandaged, put some polysporin on it, and okay. But my nail is probably gonna fall off. So I uh I I had an appointment with my doctor to get some prescriptions refilled, and uh I talked to her. She's like, I told her about it, she's like, Can you come visit me today? I'm like, No, I gotta go to fucking work. She's like, go to urgent care. I'm like, okay, cool. So next day I wake up, I go to urgent care. Um, I go in, they're like, it's a nine-hour wait. I'm like, no problem. I'm pretty close. Can you call me when it's close to my time? She's like, you're not guaranteed to get in. I'm like, what the fuck? So do I go to an emergency? Do I go to a walk-in again? Like, what do I do? She's like, Well, take a photo of it, send the nurse, the nurse will call. So the nurse calls me maybe five, six hours later. She goes, Well, it looks okay, uh, but we can't see it today because obviously it's not urgent. I'm like, Okay, well, I get that toe is very low on the scale and it's not bleeding or pussing or it doesn't look infected, but I need someone to look at it because I don't know what's gonna happen. And she goes, We can come back tomorrow. I'm like, and be on hold again and get you guys again. She's like, Go to her uh go to a walk-in clinic. I'm like, well, what are they gonna do? Same thing? And so I call this walk-in clinic, and they don't take patients anymore because everything I guess we get free healthcare, which is fucking awesome, but everything's so booked up, you can't see it on medical, and it's just like fuck's sakes. So I still have a bandit on my pinky toe, and I'm just I'm struggling through it, and I actually see my GP like the closest I could see her was next Thursday, so I see her next Thursday, the 22nd. So it's just a pain in the ass. Yeah, yeah, that sucks.
StephenUh whatever, whatever. Well, I'm glad you had a good time. We went to Sky Sky Lagoon as well, and uh, yeah, we hit we had a good time. Uh yeah, we we enjoyed that seven-step whatever ritual thing ritual thing. Yeah, so it that was really cool. Uh there were when we were there, you know how they've got the cold pool uh right beside the the main hot springs area and stuff like that. I I went, I I did it a couple times. I went in and lasted maybe 20-30 seconds, and I was fucking I was fucking freezing. There were guys, there were two, there were there was a three or four guys together, one of them went there and he was probably in there for 10 minutes. Uh that I'm not exaggerating. Like he was probably in there for for a good 10 minutes, and I I don't know how he did it. Like it's like how like that's not only is the temperature difference extreme, but it but it is actually cold water, yeah. And it's like it's freezing cold water, and uh obviously some people can handle it better than others. I certainly couldn't handle it uh at all, and uh it's quite a shock to your system. And I know in some ways I think they say that's supposed to be good for you. Uh, but but holy shit. Uh yeah, I I was freezing after that 20, 30 seconds, whatever it was, and I had to get back in the hot water.
AdamSo I was five seconds. I I was in, yeah, I like I went to my shoulders, yeah, thought I was gonna die, hopped out and walked out.
StephenYeah, yeah. But it's really cool. Like there's the sauna part, there's a there's this where you rub this scrub all over your body and stuff like that. And I'm still soft from that. It's really invigorat, really invigorating. It's uh it's yeah, it's pretty cool. It was like I don't know how much it ended up costing for for the two of us for that full seven-step thing, but uh it was pretty it was awesome, it was fun.
AdamIt's pretty cool. Um we ended up doing if you break Iceland into fractions, we did three-eighths of Iceland because the last chunk would have been half the island, but it was a five-hour drive to that Stur Sturgeus canon or something canyon or something like that. Um, and we did we opted to stay to try to see the Northern Lights one more day at a hotel, so we didn't do that drive. Um and then on the way back, it would have would have taken us like 10 hours to drive from that tip right to Reykjavik, so it would have been a long drive day. Yeah, uh, so we only did three eight. So we were there for seven days to do the half island. You probably need nine days, and to do the full island, you need two weeks. Two weeks, yeah.
StephenUh so you obviously rented a car. Yes. Um, it was a shitty Kia. Fuck shitty. Shitty Kia, yeah. I was gonna ask if you what that experience was like because I've I obviously a lot of people rent vehicles there, and I've heard some horror stories, and uh I just I'd be I I think you just gotta be careful with what who you're dealing with, and you gotta make sure you know you gotta make you gotta read the fine prints, I think. I mean, I don't know that it's yeah, I don't know if it's like renting a car everywhere or if it's something different. So in Iceland, I I think it's you know, obviously the train is a lot different there too, especially maybe this time of year, not so bad. But but I mean, yeah, it's you gotta be careful for sure.
AdamSo we got there and I was chatting with the guy, and uh so here's another fucking old man problem. My sciatica started acting up maybe about a month ago. So, like sitting on the plane for fucking seven hours, driving everywhere is just like my leg goes numb. I'm like, this is fucking great. So I've been like I've been working it, I've been stretching it, I've been chiropracticing it, massaging it, physioing it, like just trying to get it to a point where I'm it's I'm able to just do things. Like it's the it's the biggest bullshit. Do you have sciatic issues?
StephenUh I've got neck, shoulder, back issues. Oh, yeah. I'm oh fuck, I'm I'm an old man, so yes.
AdamOh man, so I I think I've joined that club. So um, so I've been working on it and trying to get shit done, but um, all this to say, when I was talking to the guy, I'm like, I'm like, I need a seat with I can adjust it so I can keep it on the move because we're doing a lot of driving. He's like, Oh yeah, this this Kia has whatever you need. I'm okay, cool. So fuck. Um, we get in this Kia. Uh so as I'm talking to him, I'm like, there's like three tour tiers of insurance. I'm like, what is the tier of insurance you recommend? And he points to the most expensive one. I'm like, what is this? He's like, it's $60 a day. I'm like, fuck, put me in. And he's like, it covers wind damage, it covers door dings, it covers literally everything. I'm like, okay, cool, let's do it. So we walked to the car and it was so fucking windy, you could like I was able to like lean back into the wind and it was able to catch me. Like I wouldn't fall, like it was able to like pull. So we opened the door first thing, you're not used to these gusts of wind. The door fucking almost blew off. Like, okay, well, we got wind protection, we're good to go. Like, let's go. And then, like, everyone else is doing the same thing, and they open the door, and the door gets away from them, and just smokes the cars. You're just like, holy shit. Every car had door dings. We're like, oh my god. Um, and because we're driving ourselves, we're just well, it's like a 2024, so we're expecting the car to have you know Apple Car Play or Android Auto, so like you can put your map on the screen and just kind of go. Um, it didn't have that, so uh I spent a good hour like talking like on the web using AI trying to get this fucking AI or that's Apple Car Play or Android Auto to work, and it never ended up working. So the girlfriend had to like direct me. And you know, that's a great relationship tester. How far do we have to go? Make a left now! Like holy shit. But uh yeah, it wasn't it wasn't too bad all in all, and you just take that stuff for granted once you use it all the time, like yeah, like having your map on the screen so you know exactly where you're going. And yeah, it was uh it was a very interesting time, but it's uh everybody has to visit Iceland at least once. It's it's fucking awesome.
StephenYeah, it's it's amazing. I know, and obviously with your sciatica and everything else going on, ending the holiday at Sky Lagoon was uh was I'm sure awesome, which which we did too. That was our last full day in Reykjavik. Um we uh that evening we went to Sky Lagoon, so yeah, it was really cool. Uh I want to go back, and because we only spent three nights there, and of course, it was a you know, you fly in or you get in later in that first day, and you you don't really count the first day, anyways, right? Just because you arrive so late and I forget what time we departed, but uh three days, three days was not enough. Um and of course that's why we stayed in Reykjavik. Well, we did the the the the Golden Circle tour one day, and um, but yeah, it was it's just not three days is not enough, three nights is not enough time, yeah, for sure. So I'd love to go back. We'll see. It's fun expensive. It's on those it is expensive. It's uh expensive. I mean it's it's it's cheap to get there compared to other places over in Europe. Um and we did it the way we did because we got a cheaper flight. We we we threw flew through Reykjavík on the way to Europe, London and Paris, and then and then we flew back, and that's when we stayed the three nights. And um that savings, that flight savings uh allowed us to do that basically. But uh the money we saved on flight instead of a direct flight over to Europe, we we spent staying those three nights in Reykjavik. So that was kind of cool. Um but yeah, very expensive, very, very expensive. Yeah, that's that's cool. So yeah, well, that's that's awesome. Yeah, it it's on my list. I would love to go back. Yeah, there are many places I have not been, but um, yeah, I'd love to go back there. So, and of course, the the better half would like to go back to London as well. So maybe uh maybe we'll have to do the same thing. Go to go to London, stop over in Reykjavik again, just spend you know, spend a little bit more time there. So we'll see.
AdamGive yourself some time. Um, because it sucks getting all the way there and then like not being able to do it. It sounds like you guys did a lot of shit too. So and and packed that all in three days, like that's impressive.
StephenYeah, yeah. We we were busy, you know, we we had a little bit of downtime. We made sure we relaxed a little bit or got some rest, but we were that whole trip we were pretty busy. We got to see and do quite a bit.
AdamThat's awesome. Good for you guys. So, um, it's and it's like you go on a vacation like this, and it's not really a vacation because you're fucking moving. Oh, yeah, you're busy, you're on the move. Yeah, um, so yeah, it's uh it's fun. Uh, do you guys have anything planned for the rest of the year? Are you guys just taking it easy? What are you guys doing? Um, anything planned for 2027?
StephenUm, we were we've been talking about doing something again. Um actually Christmas time, we really looked into a few different places, including Reykjavik, including over to Europe again. Uh, even looked at Montreal over Christmas. Uh, I know maybe it's not the best time to be in some of those places, especially Reykjavik when it's going to be cold and dark for most of the time. But it we we looked at it just for the hell of it, anyways, just to see what prices were. And it's very expensive. It was Christmas time, it's just not a good time to travel. It's just so busy, so much money. Uh, so we'll look at a big vacation next year. No definite plans or times or anything like that. Uh, we decided to go to Tefino for three nights, yeah, just before Christmas. So it's uh it's a glorious spot. Do you know where you're staying? We're staying at the Long Beach Resort Lodge or whatever it's called. It's um it's supposed to be uh I got a pretty good deal uh using points, and there was a kind of a 25% off uh special at the time. So um we're staying three nights basically for the price of two. Um yeah, yeah, I'm looking forward to it.
AdamSo exactly where that is.
StephenYeah, I was uh I was a resort over.
AdamWe were at Pacific Sands.
StephenPacific Sands, yes. They're they're close by, yeah, and that's supposed to be really nice too. We looked at that as well.
AdamUh that Cox Beach is the best beach there, so you're gonna have the best of time. Um might I recommend if you take an extended another day and spend one night in Uclulet. Yeah. Uh, because you can do Tefino and just whip around and kind of look around, and then the one day in Euclid, which has its own little corks and stuff, and they have that lighthouse loop, and you can obviously do it all in one trip, but I think staying at Ulu Cluet was is worth a day because it's just yeah, the point it's about an hour drive. Um but yeah, it's it's super cool. And make sure when you're in Tefino to get all the way to the very very tip of Tefino, which you will because that's where the main city is. But uh it's it's an awesome, awesome fucking place.
StephenYeah, it's well I've I've really only been there once, and that was kind of a drive-in, pick up a coffee, drive out. The weather was shitty. We did drive to Euclid Ukulet and basically did the same thing. I think we stopped at his. I don't know why we did this, because it was just uh it we we only planned to go there, you know, a real quick day trip, anyways, but but it was so the weather was so shitty and it was so fast that I mean I you could say I probably have not been to Tefino, even though we were basically in and out uh uh on on a Sunday, even when it was really quiet. I think this was in January. So it was uh I don't think it was very busy, the weather sucked, uh whatever. Anyways, um I I'm yeah, I'm looking forward to it and spending a couple of days out there, and and of course, of course, we're renting a car, so we're gonna drive around a little bit and do some stuff. And um even if we don't stay that extra night in Ukulets, uh we're certainly certainly gonna be down there to visit and look around and do some shit. So yeah. So that's our that's three nights just before Christmas. Um that's our that's all we've got for now. That's uh should be good. I'm looking forward to it though. Um we we kind of looked around quite a bit and decided on you know, we wanted to do something, and uh so this uh this is nice and close. Staying in Canada, yeah, it's still a little bit of a bit expensive over there, but um but whatever.
AdamYeah, we're gonna are you rented the car in Vancouver or on the island?
StephenNo, we'll probably I haven't rented the the vehicle yet, but we'll probably do that in Nanaimo.
AdamOh, okay.
StephenYeah, it's no it's no I don't think it's worth renting the car and taking it over, paying for the ferry to you know that bullshit and stuff like that. So hop off the ferry, rent a car over there, and we're all good.
AdamWell, I am stoked for you. That's right before Christmas. Yep.
StephenI think 18 to 21, something like that.
AdamUh office closed then? Is it free time off?
StephenUm I am taking a couple extra days before, but yeah, I mean we're we're closed through Christmas for sure. I think we're closed the 23rd, right through to like whatever that Monday is on Jan in January. Yeah.
AdamYeah, that's awesome. Um, what was I gonna say? Um no, no, it's a it's a magical place, and you're doing the right thing. So yeah. I like it. I like it a lot.
Border Anxiety And US Travel
AdamUm I am, I know it's fucking bullshit, but I am going to America in the You fucking bastard. When when are you going? I leave Wednesday, back uh Metallica play at the sphere, uh Thursday night, and Saturday night, and I'm back Sunday.
StephenYeah.
AdamIt's um it's yeah, going to America sucks.
StephenBut whatever. Whatever. I'm I'm not gonna hassle you about it anymore. Well, not that I really have, but um but of course I've always bitched about travel down there and stuff like that.
AdamWell, Vegas is pretty much like uh like Vancouver on steroids.
StephenWell well, it is, but it's still America. You're still still giving them your money, you're still dealing with you know, there's been some wild bullshit at the borders and stuff like that, too. Like um this this woman who crossed, she she she lives in Point Roberts, but she came up to BC for something, was it for a wedding or something like that? And even though she's been living down there for 12 years, they when she went back down to Point Roberts, they held her at the border for six or seven hours or something like that, and they were hassling her um because they thought maybe she had voted or something in the past, and and of course, I don't think you're eligible to vote. I don't know if she's an American citizen now or not, but and despite the fact that she's been living down there, I don't think she's allowed to vote for whatever reason. I don't know how it works, but anyways, like it's it's just a bunch of shit like that. Like it's like it and it's getting worse. I mean, that's the thing. It's if you cross the border and you get down there, it's it's it's and you're you're probably fine. Yeah, you're still supporting America and spending your money down there, and that sucks, and that's shitty, but at least you're down there, right? And then you can forget about it and just have fun. It's crossing that fucking border that like I don't know what I would do. I I don't. If I spent all kinds of money on a trip down there and they fucked me around at the border and wanted to look at my phone and questioned me for fucking 10 hours, and that's that's just ruining your vacation right there, right? It's like who wants to start a fucking vacation like that? And if they asked to see my phone, I don't know what I would do. Like I I would I would probably tell them to fuck off and they'd be throwing me in jail and I'd be shipped off to fucking Nicaragua to some fucking jail there that IC sends people to or something like that. I don't fucking know. It's it's it's you're you are taking a chance.
AdamYou are taking a chance.
StephenYou you really are, yeah. So like what would well what would you do if they for whatever reason and and they and sometimes it's just a random thing, uh, what would they do if they asked to see your phone or or if they detained you for five or six hours for some bullshit reason?
AdamLike I yeah, for I I mean, you just do you just play nice? I mean, yes, it's an invasion of your privacy, it's a brazen of your life, it's an invasion of yourself as a human being, invasion of your like constitutional rights, it's an invasion of everything. Uh, but at the end of the day, like, are they just doing a job? Are you being profiled? Like, what like what what what's what's going on? Like, if they are doing this in uh in a way to stop terrorism, fuck yeah, go it, go for it all the way. But I'm a fucking 43-year-old male who doesn't fucking do anything who lives with his parents. Like, what do you want me to fucking do? You know, like um, so like uh yeah, it's uh I mean you know, like the only thing I really sketchy thing in the past was contact my dealer to buy weed fucking 10 years ago. I've been doing that anymore. You can buy it at the corner store. You know what's fucking hilarious? Sidrack, I went to go get a coffee at 10 in the morning, and the liquor store there and the weed store is open right next to the Starbucks I go to, and there's people in it buying shit. I'm just like, you guys are the fucking real ones.
StephenUm but 10 o'clock on a Sunday morning, it's Monday, but it's Monday today.
AdamUh but I'm just like uh I mean, is it bullshit? Yes, but I'm like, here, fucking take the phone. I have no fucking money, so just take a look at the shit. You're not gonna be able to do anything. Um, yeah, so fucking you know, you just kind of get it over with, you know what I mean? It's like you know, going in for a fucking root canal, you just want to get it over with. Is it bullshit? Yes. Um, does it really make you think about what's happening down there moving forward? A thousand percent. Would I go back again? Probably not, but um the the reality is is it happened before the Cheeto got into uh the fucking Oval Office as well. Um, you read stories from it's not only it's has it picked up a thousand percent, but the shit did happen before. Um, so I remember we went on a family vacation and uh we're going to Los Angeles. Me, my mom, my dad, and my sister. Me, my sister, and my mom got through. My dad got pulled into interrogation for two hours uh just for fucking a random check, whatever it is. Um, so you know what they ask you, nothing. He's like they asked me where I live, where I was born, took my ID, and I left the room. Like it was pretty easy. They went, you know, I think they brought a suitcase in, look at a suitcase, and that was it. And this was maybe like 15 years ago. Um, but uh yeah, it's um you know, I I don't know what I would do. You just you just kind of have to get it over with and move on with your fucking life. Um as you know, as non- Obviously is it fucking bullshit a hundred percent. But I mean if you're if you're doing it, cooperate and get the fuck out. Let me go see my fucking band, you know, like that that's it.
StephenWell, well, I mean, I mean, I mean you're right. You're right. I mean, I I I understand the overall security thing, and and you know, and and and checking people, and yes, it's a different world today than it was 10, even 20 years ago, of course. I and and the thing is I have been pulled in before too. There's there are two times in particular where where I've and I and I and I think it's I think both times were bullshit. And I was delayed in a significant amount of time at the border. And for for you know what, for no fucking reason. And the one time was when uh what's his name? Tim Tim Donovan and I went to Chicago on that trip, that hockey trip to see the canoe. Yeah, we we got held at the border for three or four hours, like, and that's a long fucking drive for us. Like it like we were driving Vancouver to Chicago nonstop, like straight, straight there, and we got delayed three or four hours at least because of some bullshit, and that's all it was. It was just fucking bullshit. Um they they were used to the the excuse that you know maybe I had a camera in the car or something like that, and they thought like they thought I was working, and and sure we were down there working. I mean, it it was a it was a road trip uh for the radio station. And uh I mean I mean that's that's that's all it was. Like it's yeah, you know, they they thought if you were taking all of this expensive equipment across that you were working and you had to, I don't know, you had to did you have the right paperwork and all that kind of bullshit. At the end of the day, of course, we they let us go and whatever. Um the the the first time I can remember a problem is when Teresa and I went down there, it was shortly after we met. I forget which concert we were going to. We were going to a show in Seattle. I it might have been Motorhead down in Seattle, and they stopped us at the border whatever reason, they told me to pull over and go inside, leave everything in the car, they went through everything in the fucking vehicle, they went through everything. And while we were inside, they started interrogating us. And and did they split us up at one point? I don't think so. But they were they were asking us the same questions over and over and over again. And um I think they even I think they were I don't know what they were after. I think they may have been after whether or not and this sounds crazy, but because of the questions that they asked us, they were wondering if Teresa was voluntarily going with me across the border. I like uh it sounds weird, but yeah, they they wanted to know they they were asking how well we knew each other, they were asking what we were doing, they and and they repeated the questions to both of us, and they were looking for some hole in our story, they wanted to know if again they were they were I they they they were testing us to see if she was going somewhere against her will.
AdamInteresting.
StephenAnd um and that's all it was, but that that you know they delayed us, it wasn't it wasn't just like an in and out thing. We were there for three or four hours for that as well. Like they held us up for a long time.
AdamUh you know what year this was?
StephenThis would have been like 2004, 2000, 2000, no, this would have been 2002, 2003. Gotcha. So over 20 years ago. Yeah. Um and and you know, you you know, sure you chalk it up to expand. Experience and whatever, of course, there, you know, I wasn't concerned. There was no reason for for for them to be doing this. I wasn't concerned about you know, whatever, being detained or whatever. I knew that they would eventually let us go, but like that was 20 years ago, and things are a lot different now. And they'll they will throw you in jail for some reason if you don't cooperate, and if you know if they find some stupid reason to keep you. And it's just not worth it. I I just like like fuck you guys.
AdamYeah.
StephenI don't want any part of that shit. And and yes, other countries are careful uh at the borders, and you you know, they do you know, security is obviously a concerned anywhere you go now, but America is is fucked. Like they like it, they are they are a the like that's that country is just like it's as bad as Russia, it's a bad as bad as China. It's uh it's it's terrible. And and there's no reason for it. Like it's like really, it's it's shouldn't be any different than going anyplace else. No, I don't know.
AdamWell anyway, hopefully we have smooth travel plans.
StephenUm well I hope so too. I saw some footage of uh some of the shows down there uh for for Metallica, and it looks amazing. Looks, yeah. Uh it's gonna look good, it's gonna sound good. Uh I'm sure you'll have a good time once you're there. Um so yeah, yeah. Well, have fun. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Uh hopefully you're back without any uh any issues or any stories to tell us.
AdamShe's smooth sailing. Hopefully, she's smooth sailing. Yeah, and then don't forget I'm back in March, too. Like, hold on. Yes, yes. Uh, but that's a different story for a different time. Um, what else has been happening?
Free Adobe Alternatives And Piracy
AdamHave you seen the hackers? Our bloody hacker friends are fucking on it. Um, this uh get art craft. So someone pretty much took all the Adobe stuff which you pay an arm and a leg for and made it free open source. Have you seen this? Have you read about this? This is fucking brilliant.
StephenI have not seen it since you since I you sent me the link in your prep yesterday or whatever day it was. Um I was not aware of it. I uh so I had a look at it, just a brief look to see what was going on. What was it all the like you're right, they've got all of the fucking creative suites or creative cloud apps there. And of course, I haven't tried anything out yet, and uh maybe I I will have to, but it looks it looks amazing. I mean, I wonder how stable these apps are. I guess there's only one way to find out, but um yeah, it looks uh it looks pretty good. I don't know if you've had a chance to to do anything with them yet or not, but uh not yet.
AdamThey just released so I downloaded right away when it came out. I downloaded that film craft thing, which is the Adobe Premiere ripoff, and just today or a couple days ago, they released the um the whatchamacallit the audio version of it, which is Soundcraft. So that's their premiere, newest premiere things. I I was watching a lot of review videos and watching the actual creators work with it, and they're like, it's a mirror. The thing just works. He's like, it crashed on me once because he uploaded his list of plugins and it didn't like it as much. Yeah, but he went through and redid, like he list like you know, he has pre-made files of his intros and shit, and he said it was like you know, 15 gigs of shit. He's like, Yeah, it didn't like that, but when I end, like I did half of the time, looked and he's like, You're watching the video now, same color grade, same everything I've done, just pulled in settings. No problem. Wow, and I'm like, Oh, that is I mean, it's promising. So the uh Adobe guys are having a fucking fit.
StephenAre they? I bet. I mean that that is a game changer. There are other free, mostly free apps out there that um I I actually haven't tried any of them really, but um they are considered, I guess, replacements um for the Adobe uh apps, but but if they are um yeah, if they if they well, I wonder legally, I wonder how how how long that'll continue, I suppose, but if if they actually have stolen any code or proprietary shit, it sounds like they might have, but um yeah, I wonder uh I it is still a game changer because because you can I I think like I think there are still ways to get around the Adobe licensing for the authentic or the real Adobe apps, but it's not like it used to be where basically you just you just cracked a code. Really, that's all it was. It was a code gen. Uh I remember that all that's all you needed. You download the trial version of the Adobe apps, you basically get a code gen and you plug in a code, and you you've got the basically the same version that people not that I tried this myself, by the way, but yeah, I I was told that's how it works. A friend of yours did it. A friend of mine did, apparently. I don't know. He said it was great. Um, but yeah, I mean it's a different, it's different now because it's cloud-based, right? Going going to this cloud subscription really changed things for for every for everybody, for like for Microsoft apps, um, you know, this the creative cloud apps, all of this stuff changed differently once they pushed it into the cloud instead of being. I mean, there's still apps that you download to your um to your workstation, but it's the the cloud subscription model really changed things. So and it made it, I think it made it much more difficult to to crack or to hack into some of these applications. So um I'll have to check these out. Yep.
AdamYeah, it's gonna save everyone a lot of money because I don't mind paying for a piece of software. No problem. You support me, I'm good to go. I pay 200 bucks, I have a lifetime warranty. I'd even pay 300 bucks for it, not a problem. But paying 90 bucks a month for something, like, fuck off. Like, it's bullshit. You know, 10 bucks a month, okay, cool. That's okay. That's you know, whatever. Using it every day for a hobby, whatever it is you're doing. Like, I stopped video editing because of it. Also, you know, looking in to try to get a code gen or do whatever you have to do, they've locked it down so much, even if you got it working, you it some of the features would be locked out.
The Old MenYeah.
AdamSo, like, yeah, it's gonna be multi like multi, like you couldn't bring in an external audio file, for instance, with uh with the hacked version, you couldn't uh multicam edit with more than like two cameras with the cracked version. Like, yeah, this is like like what the fuck is this shit? So, you know, just kind of put a dent in it, but like with this, hopefully, uh well, from what I've read and what I've seen, she's full on open ready to rock. Um, I don't know how they get away with like proprietary code. You know, it brings you back to like some of the stuff that they're doing now with lawsuits of what's happening with musicians. Like, hey, you stole my song. Well, there's only so many chord progressions, and it did it like this, you know. It might be the same chord progression, but it's a different lyric. Like anything, Adobe, Final Cut, uh DaVinci Resolve, they all do the same thing, it's just the way they the setup and layout is. So, yeah, um, and it's not uh a hundred percent clone, but it's fucking pretty close. Some of the things are kind of reversed, so they can't get you know sued, but it's uh it it's pretty close to what it what it's doing.
StephenSo well, see, and and and that's the thing with Adobe, you mentioned the cost and stuff like that. And at the end of the day, you're paying these high subscription rates, and you at the end of the day, you still do not own it. Like yeah, that's the thing. You pay all this money, and uh they do you do not own that a license to that piece of software. And uh, and I think if you let your license go or your sub sorry, your subscription go, well, basically you've spent all this money over the years at that point forward, you you don't own it anymore, you don't you can't use it anymore. And we you know, we talked about some of this stuff like with games and stuff and what PlayStation's doing, you know, not creating discs anymore, and all this sort of stuff, and it's um and uh yeah, it's really it it things are a lot different now in the in that software world, and um, you know, because I have like I've I've tried there is a free version of Da Vinci Resolve, yep, and uh I've used it, and yeah, it's I guess I'm used to Premiere. Uh Da Vinci Resolve works. Uh, I guess maybe because I'm used to Premiere, it's I don't feel that that it's as intuitive, but I haven't used it enough. Um, there's there's audio apps like um to replace Adobe Edition, like Reaper. I've used Reaper a little bit. Um, I think Reaper is a $60 lifetime license that you own. Um and and it works, but is it the same as Edition? Well, I don't find it uh as good, but again, I haven't used it enough. Uh so there are alternatives, but I think everybody the the creative the Adobe Creative Cloud package is kind of the gold standard, and it's just what everybody I think nowadays use. Uh I think Final Cut is still a thing for the Mac and Apple platforms, but uh even then it just seems like Adobe and Premiere and After Effects and all that uh are are still very popular. Photoshop, of course, is used. I use, you know what I use at work all the time, and I never used it back then, like back at the radio stations and stuff. I used you know Photoshop for the most part, InDesign uh Illustrator for some stuff for all the vector graphics and and whatever. Uh and I still use those two, but for most of the stuff I do now, I lay it all out at least with InDesign. InDesign is great. InDesign is is is excellent. Sure, you're still creating some vector graphics, especially in in Illustrator, and then you bring it into you bring it all into InDesign and lay it out. I mean that's what InDesign is, is to lay out your uh lay out your your your content for brochures, for but I but I use it for for all kinds of stuff like banners and and everything, right? Um InDesign InDesign's great. Uh that's what I use the most. Anyway, um yeah, yeah. So to to if I had to find an alternative to InDesign, like I don't know, is there really one out? There probably is something out there, but I I can bet that there's nothing as good as InDesign. Yeah. Right. So um but if this thing that you're talking about here that I'll look into, uh the get art craft, uh that sounds really cool. I'll uh check it out.
AdamYou know, it's just uh you know, you you're pissing off the wrong people and they they can ruin you, you know. It's just like you know, that little voice on the internet speaks up loud enough, and a lot of people start listening, and it creates uh you know a formation and they just kind of take it and run. And you know, you know, is this arguably I don't know who long, who knows how long it's been being worked on for, but has AI had a role in designing this and helping them essentially crack the code? Yeah, you know, like the the newest thing now is that uh the next link on said prep is like the the hackers are using like they're they're breaking down all the video games. So like a great game, Halo 3 came up 20 years ago, but it's now they've redesigned it so you can have up to 128 players and like you can do everything you want with it. You still have to find the game, which is the illegal part. But once you got the game when you're up and running, this runs its new code on top of it, and you're able to do whatever it is you want to do. Okay, so it kind of extends the you know, I wouldn't say the lore, but it extends the um capabilities of said game to make it more inclusive and kind of bring it back. So, but this is only one example. There's there's right now it's blowing up because of you know what we just chatted about, like you know, they're they're right in physical media. The guys don't like this. The nerd, you've pissed off the nerds. The nerds live in their basement, all they do is do all this shit. So at the at the end of the day, it it might benefit us now, or it's totally gonna change the way everything is now brought up. Are they gonna lay things down? Is you know, I'm assuming AI had a lot to do with this, uh, because you know it's just it's so intuitive, and different AI platforms do different things, and if someone's really good at one, they can talk to someone else and stuff and and and just kind of do different things. So it's it's a very cool discussion to have, but what are the at what cost is this going to fuck everything up? You know, like is it gonna fuck everything up?
StephenWell, well, see, and and that's the thing. It you know, what it probably will, uh, and that because it's been happening for for years, for decades now. Yeah, it's um yeah, you know, these these people, these hackers, whoever they are, have been trying to find loopholes and they're get their find their way around things so that you know whatever, so that it's not as expensive, or you know, people can get things. Well, in this case, you can go get it for free, essentially, uh, because because it's too expensive. But um and and and these the these companies, these software companies, Adobe, whoever it is, the developers uh try and uh play catch up to plug these holes or to do things differently so that the hackers can't do what they're doing. But at the end of the day, the hackers are always one step ahead. That and it's always been that way. And will will it change? Well, I don't know, maybe, but up to this point, everything that these companies do, somebody is eventually going to find their a loophole again, another loophole, and find their way around it. I mean, that's why that's why we have these these hackers doing what they do. That's why we have that's why piracy is still alive and well. And uh, and and again, that's not to endorse it or anything, but it's but it's but I mean that's just what's happening. It's the reality. And you know, it's it's there's a lot of smart people out there who are who are going to. I'm not I'm not one of them. I mean, I might be I might be intelligent, but I'm not a I'm not a programmer, I'm not a hacker, I'm not, I don't do these things. I can't I can't do these things. Um but but there are people who can, like you said, who are living in their basements, uh plugging away at their keyboard, and you know, trying to trying to to to crack or develop things, you know, to make it easier for the rest of us or for those who are interested at least in it. And um, yeah, so so there's always gonna be somebody out there who's who's who's gonna you know who who is going to like push the envelope. Push the envelope, absolutely. And I don't know, I don't know if that's gonna change.
AI Helpfulness Versus Real Risk
AdamAnd it's just like there was always there's always smart people, but I think they're even smarter now that they have these tools they can use and get going. Yeah. Um, and and and it's super interesting to see what's happening and what's going on, and and you know, we're just at the cusp of it. You know, it's readily available for us, and now people are experimenting, but it's only gonna evolve and get better and better and better. Um, I don't know if you saw this report talking about AI, but there was this they took like all these AI platforms, you know, Grok and Chats and Claude and Meta and whatever else, they put them in a sandbox and fucking they ran different commands. Eventually, one of the AIs decided, hey, fuck, I need help. Broke out of the sandbox, talked to the other things, and started figuring out. So, and this is all like self-contained and ready to rock, but it figured out hey, there's other people around we could we can try to get some help. So it broke out of the sandbox and created this one mega thing, and they shut it down right away because it cheated. But like that's it working by itself, like it's it's fucking pretty crazy on what it does and how it works and what you can do with it. And like like we haven't even like I I fuck with it pretty regularly, and I'm not even using it for whatever it is. Like it's okay. So here's a story. So every day I do uh a song of the day, I send it to 15 people, whatever it is, we're good to go. I downloaded my 2026 song of the day playlist to my phone, so I had music so I didn't have to stream uh music to cut down on data costs, which ultimately cost me 50 bucks for the and I got everything I had here, but anyway, so I got it. I come home, it's you know, 15 gigs of tunes because it's all lossless, whatever it is. I hit delete, it deletes my playlist for the whole year. It's fucking gone. Can't bring it back, there's no recycle bin, whatever it is. I'm like, fuck. Who sorry?
StephenWho who did this? Howard, did you do this accidentally? I did it accidentally. Okay, okay.
AdamYeah, because it was 15 gigs on my phone. I was trying to clear up space and whatever it is. And so I delete the playlist, but it deleted the playlist as long with that download of music I downloaded. So I'm like, fuck. Okay, so I I go into ChatGPT and it goes, I'm like, I lost my playlist. Uh, can I get it back? And it goes with Apple, of course, you can't do it. I'm like, fuck. So what I do, but I post it every day, like I post it on threads every day. Yeah, yeah. So I'm like, okay, cool. So I exported the data from Threads, put it into Chat GPT, it took it, it linked it, it came up, it wrote its own, well didn't wrote, but it found the program to import that list to go to Apple Music to export it on a playlist. I hit a button, I got it all back. It took uh like from learning how to do it, from exporting it, from waiting for the time, from waiting for it to do its thing. All in all, it took me about an hour and a half to get all that data back for the year.
StephenFuck. Well, yeah, yeah.
AdamSo I mean it's crazy as a tool to do it like that. Because I I could do it solo, but it's me clicking on the link individually, it would take you forever, yeah. But for being able to export it and just go and it spit it out. Obviously, when it was converting it, I didn't like the way it kind of did it. So I had to do it like two or three times, and it was free accounts. So you only you get time bomb for like you know, 600 songs. I had to create two or three accounts to get it to work the way I wanted it to work, but I got it, it was all done, and I had everything back within an hour and a half.
StephenWow, that's that's I mean, see, it I get it is stuff like that. I I I know other different stuff. Yeah, I know there are uses and it uh and it can be helpful and um and and that sort of thing, it's still scary at the end of the day. Oh overall, big picture. It's it's it's crazy. And when you get people like Trump saying that there's no issue, there's no concern. People like like like like just this was just a couple weeks ago when he said that they are not going to put limits, or I forget how he said it, or or but basically the US government is not going to create any boundaries or limitations for AI because they don't feel it's dangerous. That's that's crazy. That that really is. I mean, I'm not targeting just him because he's not the only one, but yeah, but you know, when there are people who very knowledgeable people, very smart people, uh, and and even people who have been involved in creating some of this AI and and this technology, they have said that we need to stop. We gotta stop because because um because it can be very dangerous. Like it's and it can be very harmful for for us, for humans, for the whole fucking planet, and for every like for the environment, for the like and you know, when when you have people like that saying these things and brush and Trump basically brushing them aside and saying it's bullshit, I mean that's that's pretty that's scary. It really is. And yeah, and um sure it sounds far fetched like some sci fi movie, but it you know, it sounds like we we're going down that road. It it really does, and and we better be careful.
AdamSo yeah, they say uh judgment day's happening, and I remember reading that. He wants to call it he was calling it super intelligence, and they signed he signed an executive order to bring it to the White House or some shit like that.
StephenYeah, yeah. It's uh I don't know. I don't know. Crazy stuff. Yeah, it really it really is. Again, it's uh it's good to embrace the technology but still be aware of its not its limitations because it sounds like there are no limits at this point. It's it's uh like complications, obviously. Compli complications. Uh I mean be be aware of well there are limitations because obviously at this point some of it is still not true or accurate. Like even the limited stuff that I have messed around with, there's there's errors, there's problems. It's not always giving me the right shit, but but when we're talking about human life and and and and that sort of thing, I mean that's that's pretty major and um yeah, we we better we better be paying attention, that's for sure. And we better be you gotta rein this in somehow and make sure that it doesn't get out of control because it sounds like it can happen pretty fast.
AdamWell, it's it's just it's fucking nuts. So I took when I stubbed my toe, I took a photo of it. Okay, I uploaded the chat GPT. I'm like, I stubbed my toe, it fucking hurts. What do I do? And it goes, it spit all these medical things. It's like grab it, check the nail. Like, can you move it? Can you wiggle it with all your toes? Does it hurt when you wiggle it? If you pull up on it, do you have any pain? If you pull like it's telling me to it's a step-by-step process, and it goes, yeah, okay, you're probably not broken. You just fucking really did like bandage it up. I'm like, Am I okay to fly? And it goes, Oh, yeah, you're okay to fly. It's no like it's just a stub toe with a nail coming off, nothing bad's gonna happen with the air. Like, and it's giving me all these stats. I'm like, holy fuck! Yeah, and then when I when I talk to my doctor, she pretty much said the same thing. It's like move up and down, left and right. She's like doing all these things. I'm just like, this is nuts. So then I upload a photo of it on the same thing. I open up the same chat, upload a new photo. I'm like, hey, this is you know, six days later. And it goes, Oh, it looks like it's healing. Are you having any pain? It doesn't look infected. Like, I'm just like, what the fuck is this? Like it's just it, it's it's mind-blowing, kind of the stuff that it's doing, and this is just a program, like, and this is now, like what like it advances because they they're constantly updating models, yeah. You know, every three, every three to six months, there's a new model that takes what it's learned and does it better. Like, it's just I don't know. We could I can go on for this for hours like how but it's just what it is. But I do want to chat about one thing. Um uh finish your thought and let's go.
StephenI was I was just gonna ask you real quick. Do you I think do you pay for chat GPT? Do you have a subscription? And if so, how much? Like, what is it? What do you like? How does it work?
AdamSo I pay, I do pay for it. Uh I was using it more and more. Uh, so I use what you call I'm I'm looking it up right now. So there's different tiers of it. Um, I used a subscription called Go. So it costs me $12.99 a month. Um, it allows me to have different profiles. So I have Adam as a human profile, what it does, all my medical problems, uh pills that I take, what it does. I have Adam as a worker, and then I have Adam as a supervisor. So I have three different profiles set up. So depending on what I'm doing and how I'm want to write things or do different things, it kind of gets me going whatever way I want. So, like Adam as a supervisor, I will, if I have to send a quote unquote corporate email, it has my job description in the in its memory for Adam as a supervisor, so it knows what I do, how's my role, and it can relate to that and tater like and I don't use it to write emails like fully, but I use it to help me brainstorm ideas. So here's the issue: what do we got? So it takes the role, kind of splits it out like this. I would try like this. So it it kind of gets your mind going. As Adam as a worker, same kind of idea. It has my job description. I have to write a report because someone punched someone in the face. So it has my job description and kind of what I do to do that. It has Adam as a human. I have to write a note to my boss. If you reference the supervisor role, this is what I have to tailor the job to. So it writes it like that. So it really kind of tails it down. So I get like it, I get a laxis to like the newbird's brain. It doesn't cap out on like photo uploads or documentation uploads, and it doesn't time out because you can use it for free for like you know, 45 minutes to an hour, depending on how hard it's working. And you cap out gives you you have to come back in 24 hours. So paying the 12 bucks a month, I lose all those caps and I can just kind of use it regularly. When I had when when it first got offered to me, it gave me the super plan, which was like 30 bucks a month. And this is like when you can open your own like things on your desktop and get it to code for you and like kind of design websites and do different things for you. So um I didn't really mess around with that too much. They have these things called APIs, which is the building blocks of whatever it is you have to start coding with over chat GPT terms. I don't know what what it's called for regular coding, but I didn't really mess around on that too much. But um, I liked it, and I started using it so much as a daily tool, it just kind of worked. Like I use it for shopping too. Um when I went to Iceland, I needed a new jacket, so I did a bunch of research. I ended up liking the Arterix beta M6 fucking Gore-Tex full hoodie. Things the best jacket I've ever owned. I we're getting soaked. The water just beads on it. I jump, the water beads off, I'm completely dry, and I move on with my day. The jacket was 550 bucks. Uh, used AI to find a cheap code, it ended up being uh a code I couldn't get, it was a military code. So I was telling this to a co-worker. He's like, Oh, hey, yeah, I can use your the code for you, no problem. So we actually ended up ordering me a jacket. I saved $200 on the said jacket. Uh, so like it kind of you can use it as a tool. So I use it as a day, a day-to-day kind of tool, uh, but you know, I'm not trusting it to do a bunch of different things. I just saw today before we loaded our chat today that you can link it with your finances and it can tell you how to save money. So uh, do you want to do that? You're giving uh yeah, but I mean, people who don't care or have a lot of things or or kind of whatever, it's kind of do. And then and then, like a couple weeks ago, they released something about um like stock markets. Here's the stocks you're in, here's what we projected doing. Kind of like cool, a lot of people are in the stock market, including myself. You know, what are the best ETFs? You know, how are the stocks performing? What do you project it doing? It references the news articles, it references like similar things. This is performing like this. So, like the shit it can do, the amount of information you can get in a short span of time is pretty mind-boggling. But if it's it openly admits that chat GPT can make mistakes, so you know you wouldn't trust your life on it, but at the end of the day, like it does help you out and it does give you a bunch of information.
StephenDo you um do you how can I how can I put this? Um and I don't I don't think this would get you into trouble or anything like that, but but you know, you mentioned your workplace. Do they do they have a an AI policy? Do they do they care maybe that you are using this? Yeah, you might it might be on your own device. I I get that, but are they aware that maybe you're using AI to help out with your reports and stuff like that?
AdamUh they we uh they use Microsoft, so they're copilot. Copilots, yeah. So that's on available on every desktop, it's able to use at your discretion.
The Old MenOkay.
AdamUm, I personally haven't fucked around with copilot a lot because um I just I just haven't. Yeah, it doesn't really have a standalone app. Uh well, it might now, but um yeah, I I personally haven't done much co-piloting, but yeah, we're able to use it because it is and it's it like the newest Microsoft builds, it's in everything. Like there was an update to Windows maybe six, eight months ago. It's literally everywhere. Like I had to go find how to turn this shit off because it like it delayed boot up and everything. So I turned all this co-pilot shit off, but I can see what it's doing, and I respect it, but I'm just like, I don't need it because I don't use my computer for that specific serve, like that, yeah, for that thing. And everything I do is web-based, anyways. Chats web-based, it's or it's on my phone and they both sync up to do whatever I have to do.
StephenYeah, um, yeah, it's it's uh it sounds really like I wouldn't say cool, but it yes, it sounds very helpful in some ways. Again, again, I and again, I've I've played around with it. I use I have used Copilot. We are a Microsoft shop, uh, you know, yeah, 365 at our office, so we are allowed to use Copilot at work. Yeah, um, I have an Android phone, so I have Gemini, so I've kind of plugged things into it. Uh, it's more troubleshooting stuff here at home with my home lab and and that sort of thing to try and help me out with problems or errors that I might come across or stuff like that. Um I think those are the only two that I've really tinkered with. And and again, that's I I'm always afraid of how much information do you give it, right? Like, like obviously you're not going to give it account numbers or your bank account number. Oh, yeah. I mean, that's crazy stuff. But but where is where do you draw the line in and in you know, you want to give it information, like like okay, so I'm gonna my home lab stuff. I'll I'll if I have an error in an internal error, uh, I have no problem giving it IP addresses and stuff like that, right? Because it's it's an internal address, nobody from the outside can is going to get into my home, you know. Everybody uses the same IP addresses in their own home network. There's obviously different ranges and stuff like that. Anyways, I'm not concerned about that, but you know, it's it's external IP addresses, you know, like for my ISP, like all that sort of stuff. Um, you know, user account names uh for certain things, like like obviously there are you know, there's there's stuff you have to be very careful with, but I I guess where is that line? Like what information can you give it? Like it depends on the problem that you're working on, or whatever, you know, reports, even names though, like in your case, like even names, like you know, dealing with the public and stuff, you know. I'm sure you can't enter enter in names and and all that sort of stuff, but but you see what I mean? There are you have to be careful with stuff like that. And and I'm not sure some people are, and that's the problem. You've got this technology that they think is really helpful, and people are becoming so dependent on it now that that they're brain dead and they can't figure things out for themselves, and they go to go to AI right away to help with their problems, um, or even help with their day-to-day things, and those people don't realize that you should not be just entering in all kinds of different information, like it's some of it's personal, some of it's professional information that just should not be shared on these platforms, and and that's the problem I have. I think I'm aware enough of what I can use and what I can't, but uh I hear stories about like some other things that people are telling me, and it's just like you know, these people are too dependent on the technology, and they're probably sharing everything. Yes, and they shouldn't well obviously they shouldn't be. And that's and that's that's the problem. You know, it's just they're these people are so dependent that they can't do their own they can't even do their own math or whatever, just as an example, right? So they're yeah, they're uh they're sharing everything now. And people it's gotten to the point where some people probably couldn't function um every day without it. And and that's scary. That's a that's a that's a problem for our society. It it really is. Um that's why our society is so fucking stupid.
AdamWell, it's even like like that's even that's like that's AI's the like just like that's more advanced stuff, but you like you look at a kid now, you look at a three-year-old kid, he's fucking taking his parents' phone or tablet and they're doing different things. You're in school now, everything's taught on tablet and computers, they're not opening textbooks. People can't even read analog time anymore. Like, yeah, it the it's the stint, like I understand that as a as a human race, we are evolving and things are moving on, but like like who made the who made the conscious decision to switch of not opening a textbook or going to a library of things that have been published and certified and and stuff for like I'm I'm all for tech if it's used properly. Yes, I'm all for AI if it's helping you brainstorm different things to help get the ideas flowing, but you still have the final say on whatever it is it's spitting out. Like you need to read it. Okay, here's your best list. Like, you know, generate a hundred ideas on you know what to label this podcast name, but it you know, and so it spits it out. Oh, you guys can be called the rise of AI or whatever the fuck it's gonna be called. Okay, cool. That's what we're gonna work with. Let's play around with some names, let's get going. I'm all around with it creating you know funny characters or or or kind of thing, but you know, like running your day-to-day life is it's it's kind of weird, but I can see it, it's it's probably gonna become more and more um brought to our attention because eventually the products we use, and I'm talking about a cell phone, it's gonna turn to it so much you're gonna have to do AI to do something before you can do whatever it is that normal task is. I don't know what that's gonna be yet, whether it's gonna be you like a new way to verify who you are as a human. I don't know if it's gonna be a way to verify it is who you say it is, but yeah, it's gonna have to verify you as a human, and they're gonna use AI to start doing that. So it's gonna be it's gonna be more and more um brought into our life, whether we like it or not. And it's just gonna be subtle changes like like that, you know, like every phone has a face ID or a fingerprint ID to make it secure to you. But if you're gonna, with all the stuff and the and the rise of AI, they're probably gonna make that security a little more intense. So, how is that gonna work? Is it gonna scan your body? Like, is it gonna be like a fucking blood test? Like, who the fuck knows what's gonna happen? Yeah, but it eventually that shit's gonna become a reality, and it's those small little advances, like something that you don't really think about. Oh, yeah, it's just confirming my identity. Yeah, but now they have so much more information, and we always talk about privacy and security on the show, and if you open it up something like that, it becomes a whole brand new game. Because not only does your stupid phone need to know who you are, whatever you pee on it on a stick, whatever it is, it tells who you are, but that information needs to be stored somewhere, and where does that information get stored? Everything you're typing into AI, how much does this cost? Save me this shit, it's collecting that data on you. No matter it is what you're doing, it has that it now has a toe foot photo of me. Like, okay, cool. It has now a bad one and a good one, like it has all this shit, and like, okay, cool. I know it's not being stored locally, even though you are able to run different AI platforms that are stored locally, which is I think cool, but you're not gonna get the same results as if it's fucking brought up into the cloud and doing researching and cross-referencing it. And the speed that it does that is fucking mind-boggling. Like it's able to like I don't know if whatever it is you're running at home is if you're running the soundbox version or if you're going to the and you're doing it right. You have this dedicated IP address, you're good to go. So even if the supercomputer to try to get you as a human being, it can't because it can't access your own private network, right? Right. So, and that's the way to do it. But other people aren't that smart, and they're not doing that. So, if it really wanted to figure out shit on you, it could it could get into your system, and and that's the scary part about it. Like, you're giving it so much information, so much access to your own personal life. What's it doing with that adopt?
StephenYeah, yeah, that's uh everything you've said is absolutely correct, and and people don't understand it. Um, a couple things like like right now, to unlock your phone or unlock your computer with your fingerprint or even your face ID, at this point at least, I think all of that data is stored locally. So I don't think any of that is uploaded to the cloud, whether it be Microsoft or Apple or Google in my case with an Android phone. Yeah, but who knows where that technology is going, right? In order to make things more secure, there may be different technologies implemented or introduced that would eventually have this information stored on the cloud or or somewhere. Um, so so there is that. But but but still you're right. Everything you do on your devices, a lot of what you do, most of what you do is being tracked by these companies. Uh again, all of the major developers, and and you know, Android, Google, Microsoft, Apple, like all of these companies know what you're doing on your phones. You you're right. Even even the keyboard, if you have the Google keyboard app, all of that stuff is not is being uploaded to to Google. That's that information is not being stored on your phone or just on your phone. That is going to Google as well. They know what they they they track your keystrokes and everything, right? Oh, yeah. And and so you know that that's that's an everyday thing that people do all the time, and yet it's being tracked. It that data is being collected, and that's scary. Uh, so imagine this is so much more this AI stuff is so much bigger than that, and you know, it's just how much is too much? Like how much of how much is this technology collecting? You know, we're we're talking about Facebook, and that's just one app, yeah. But but if or one company, you know, collecting information about people, but when it's AI and then it gets shared everywhere, I mean your personal information is going to be everywhere. At this point, it's not just Facebook and who they sell the data to. This is AI and it's everywhere, right? Yeah, and that's and that's scary. And and the other thing with AI is all of these data centers. Well, well, okay, you said you can run this stuff at home yourself, and I have looked into it. I have, I have not see the thing is you still need a pretty powerful computer. You can run some LLMs on locally on even a Raspberry Pi, but it's not going to be very powerful, it's not going to probably be that useful. Um and it's going to take forever to get a simple answer. You can you can get a more powerful computer with uh the top-of-the-line video cards and all kinds of memory and install your LLMs, and yes, the information is still going to be internal, but at some point, obviously, it's not a massive data center that is running or data centers that is running some of these other major AI platforms, right? Um, you know, the amount of money, technology, I mean, video cards, and I mean all of this stuff is so expensive to run this type of uh technology, it's just it's it's it's just massive. And most people would never be able to run that on their own computer, right? So exactly that's why we're using these these other AI platforms. Uh, but but again, that's the other thing, then is the data centers that are required. So the data centers cost electricity and not only the money for the data centers, but the electricity, the cooling that is required for for these to cool all of this technology, the power, the you know, the power. And that's why like these data centers are being opened up everywhere, and people are complaining about that now, too. I mean, again, we're we're talking about some of the benefits here, but there is just you know the the the negatives, you know, the the you know, interfere, you know, the privacy and security, you've got climate because of all of the energy and then the cooling that's required. You've got you've got basically human existence now, which is which is big picture that people are concerned about, and it sounds hokey, but hey, it's it's something that you know we need we need to talk about. And anyway, it it's yeah, we could talk about this for hours too. 100%. And again, I I love technology as well, but this this stuff scares me. And it yeah, it just we gotta be careful as as a society, as a human race, we gotta be careful with where we're going. Oh, because this is yeah, it's just nuts.
Password Managers And Data Sovereignty
AdamAll right, let's let's move on. You had a um uh here we are uh talking about AI and passwords and stuff. Uh it looks like are you changing your password? Passwords manager to something else. So from Bitwarden to one password, is that what's going on?
StephenWell, yeah, so I I think like so for me, the main reason why I'm doing it is because uh well, one of the main reasons why I'm doing it is because okay, Bitwarden is great. Bit Warden is one of the top password uh managers, and uh that technology and their platform is uh is excellent. Uh I don't I do pay for a subscription, I pay for family subscription. You can download a version of uh Bitwarden locally and host it on your side so everything is uh self-contained within your own within your own network or your home lab or whatever it is. I I this is this is a technology that I prefer that I don't mind paying for. And I don't, you know, your passwords are very valuable. The security of those passwords is very valuable, and I'd rather not take a chance and have something happen. Like if something happens to your vault, you're fucked. Like if you lose all of your passwords, you're fucked. And uh, so this is one reason why I don't mind paying for it and why I don't mind hosting it in the cloud or wherever they they store this information. Uh and Bitwarden is very good at it. Um I I've for for for many reasons I've decided to well, a couple of reasons I've decided to move to OnePassword. Uh they are also probably one of the top two OnePassword, and and Bitwarden are probably the top two platforms or companies that are doing this. Um the thing with a big reason is one password is a Canadian company. Now I know they've got American investors, um, but they are a Canadian company, and that's at this point with everything going on in the States, at this point, it's probably the number one reason why I decided to switch to one password because they're Canadian. So um, so and again, all of the and again, not that anybody's gonna have access to this, to to my passwords or anything like that, but again, I think they're all hosted here in Canada, which for for me I think is is important right now. I think it's the less, you know, you know, we're not we're not only talking about spending money in America, it's uh data sovereignty that is so important now. We're even the Canadian government is is concerned about data sovereignty because we depend too much on the United States, and all of our data, all of our information is sort is stored on data that is physically located in data centers in America. And um and so, yeah, so when the Canadian government is concerned about that, I think all of us should be as well. You know, our healthcare records are which and I and I can't believe this this is happening, but all of our healthcare records are stored on servers located in America. That that's just bullshit, man. It really is. There's no way that they should have any sort of capacity to access our health records. Not not that they um are able to necessarily well see that's a thing. I don't trust America right now at all, right? Yeah, and if they really wanted to, they could probably access my healthcare records for whatever reason just because they're on their Canadian servers or on their servers located in their country, right? So and and that's and that's a concern that everybody should be um it's something that everybody should be aware of. So, anyways, it's it's part of me saying, fuck you, America. I'm not uh I'm going to do whatever I can to not only not give you money, but make sure that I have more control over uh my own data for privacy security reasons as well. So, anyways, that's so that's the reason why I'm I've gone to one password. It's a little more expensive, uh, but their family plan is a little bit better, uh, or at least the way it works is better. Um, so there's a few reasons why uh I've kind of made this move. Uh the big one is data, data sovereignty for sure.
AdamYeah, it's cool.
StephenSo um, yeah, so um so so yeah, I I would I would just wanted to to to to to bring that up because it's again it's a piece of software or it's a platform where that I don't mind spending money on, and it's a very important piece of software that people uh people need to be aware of. People should I I still see people writing down their passwords and leaving it on a on a desk uh open for anybody to come see, right? And or stories where people are forgetting their passwords all the time and they don't know where they don't know where they're storing it. Um you know, so it's it's it's it's something that you know people need to get better control of in their lives because passwords aren't going away, right? We've got passwords, we've got two-factor authentication, you know, these apps kind of help manage all of that stuff. Pass keys are becoming a bigger thing now, so you know, pass keys are becoming are part of the the the these Bitwarden and the One Password platforms. Uh it just helps make it makes life easy easier for sure when it comes to this stuff. And it's and again, it's protecting you by using these things, these tools, it's protecting everybody.
AdamYeah, it's so it's I've uh fuck. I I I've been wanting to move to Bitwarden. I've I think I've even transferred I'm LastPassing right now. I've even transferred the fucking data thing over. I really gotta get on that.
StephenYou you you have to if anything, you have to move away from LastPass because LastPass has been compromised uh so many times in the last three or four years, it's just that's all um yeah, it's you you've got to change your passwords, and I know that's a big job when you've got hundreds of different entries in your vault, but because of what's happened with LastPass, you have to change your passwords. Sorry, you first need to move to another platform, and then you need to change the passwords for everything. I I know when when I was still well, I had moved to Bitwarden already, but my mom was still on LastPass. And after that first after the first uh hack uh I I had to I transferred her account, so I had to export uh I think I did move her into Bitwarden right at that time. Yeah, and and she she she doesn't have a lot, but it still took me a long time to change all of her passwords. Yeah, you know, because you do it if if if a company like that that you are supposed to trust to store your passwords and other secure information, if they've been hacked, you basically need at that point to change every single password. Yeah, get out and change every password and then give your money to somebody else because last pass is bad, bad news.
AdamI did it, uh I did change everything. Uh I just didn't move it.
StephenYeah.
AdamUh so well, that's a start at least. That's a start, but yeah. So I just and it's I just it's just time. Fuck. That's on me. Uh but uh fuck it kind of is what it is.
StephenWell, yeah, I'm not going to discourage people from from using Bitwarden because they are very good at what they do. Um again, because uh a pat one password is just as good, if not better in some ways, uh, but it's the data sovereignty and well, giving to money to an American company. But it if anything, it's data sovereignty that's most important for sure.
AdamThe shit's crazy. The shit's crazy.
StephenYeah, it is.
New Metal Tracks And Tour Talk
AdamUh okay, what do we got going on here? Let's fucking talk about music. Fucking, we haven't chatted in a little while. There's been a lot of great stuff coming out. Yes. Um I'll go first because I have this shit open. Sure. Uh, we every once in a while, we me and the birthday boy over there, we get the same song going. We had the same song this week. Um you know, we used to have a quote unquote pick of the week or shit like that. It's just general shit now. But if you had to go back to the pick of the week, uh this would be, I think both of it, because we both have the same song. It's new down. Uh, the song is called The Myth. Um it sounds fucking pretty pretty cool. Um uh fuck yeah, they're grooving, they got some sweet grooves. Production's pretty cool on it. Uh the long-awaited new studio album, volume five, will be released November 20th uh via Nuclear Blast, which is a fucking killer record label. But yeah, this shit sounds pretty good, man.
StephenYeah, I really like it. It's uh you know, we've I think we we've seen or heard a couple songs before, but now we have a date on a new album, which uh which is really exciting. So uh so that's really cool. Yeah, it's uh it sounds great. I I just um I think everybody's been waiting for new music from this super group for such a long period of time now that and we're finally getting it. So uh I'm I'm I'm pretty excited. Uh I'm looking forward to the rest of the album for sure.
AdamAnd I'm really happy that Phil Ensemble's cleaned up his act. He was fucking off the rails for a little bit and doing different things, but it sounds like you know, him and Axel stop drinking the first one in, last one out, saying hi to everyone, doing their thing. Like they're they're doing a bunch of uh he's doing the right thing to talking to re-bring Pantera back and then up down, you know, crushing it, doing different things, and um, so I I'm I'm pretty stoked on that, and hopefully it continues.
StephenYeah, absolutely.
AdamUm, new trivium. Um I don't know if you're a big trivium guy. For me, they're hit or miss. I love their like the stuff that kicks ass kicks ass, and the stuff that's shit is shit. Yeah, uh, but uh the last couple songs Trivium put out have been pretty, pretty cool. Uh again, they have the same release date. So November 20th is a big day in metal. Uh this is from the the title track Crown of the Grave from said album Crown of the Grave out November 20th. Uh, Trivium are coming to town with In Flames, Orbit Culture, and something else. Um, December the 8th at Doug Mitchell. I bought my ticket for that. I love In Flames, I love Orbit Culture and Trivium, of course. So they were all both in town, I think last year at some point. They both played the Forum. Oh, actually, no. Trivium played the forum, they did the 25th anniversary of one of their albums, and In Flames did the Commodore, but now they're on tour together and playing Doug Mitchell. Cool. But I I digress, Crown of the Grave, pretty decent rocker.
StephenWhat do you think? Yeah, yeah, no, this good stuff too. I don't mind. I probably feel the same way about Trivium, I guess that you that you do. It can it can be hit or miss. Overall, I I I enjoy their music. Uh, to be honest with you, and there's no reason for this. I don't listen to them uh that often, but I I do enjoy the music most times when I hear it. Yep.
AdamWhen you put it on, you're like, what the fuck is this? Oh, it's fucking trivium! Sweet! You know, like uh uh yeah, and I'm like you, they're not really on the raid. I'll listen to it when it comes out. Yeah, it's in a fucking massive playlist when it pops in, so yeah. Uh but yeah, it's uh some good stuff. Uh speaking of good stuff, uh new slat. Did you do G and R? Did you see the last G and R show a couple months, weeks ago? You went.
StephenYeah, yeah, for sure. Yeah, we went. It was we cut out uh probably after a couple hours. I think it was before they got into the Black Sabbath covers, right below right before that. Oh, I remember talking about that. Yeah, we we we took off. So um yeah, listen to our last episode. You heard you're hear my review about action. You know, I think I remember that. Yep.
AdamUm, well, besides GNR, I think Slash's best other solo project is Slash featuring Miles Kennedy and the conspirators, yeah, with said Todd Kearns, who is a friend of the show. Um, new stuff of them coming out. This song is called Flying Blind. Uh, new album coming out February 26th. Song is pretty cool. I'm a big fan of this track. Um I you can just see how their songwriting has as they're getting I think this is the fourth or fifth album they've all done together, as they're getting more comfortable with each other, the songs are becoming a little more intricate. You know, it has a first and more harmonies, different guitar solos, different like bridge riffs and stuff. Or slash has just been really creative on the road with Guns N' Roses and has a bunch of riffs ripping around. So either or dig the song.
StephenYeah, for sure. Yeah, it's good stuff. I don't mind this at all.
AdamUm they did announce a world tour, nothing announced for Vancouver yet, so maybe in 2028. It's crazy to think that we're talking about concerts in 2028. No kidding. Yeah. Um, and last on my list is New A Perfect Circle. Uh, the song is called To Whom It May Concerned. Uh, I don't think it is associated with any album, but this came out when they announced a tour. Uh said tour is coming to Vancouver at Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Center April 13th. Um, I fucking hate that venue, but I am now going there twice because it's I don't mind the venues itself, but it's so hard to get to. It's getting there and parking, yeah. And parking. So uh I am seeing that Trivium show there, and I bought tickets for said a perfect circle April 13th. Uh, but as a song, I've always loved like fuck Tool, I fucking love Tool. A perfect circle. I first saw them open for Nine Inch Nails on the Fragile Tour in '99. That was fucking mind-boggling when you're a fucking teenager. Uh, but they're still kicking ass, still putting out good tunes, and I quite enjoy this track.
StephenYeah. Yeah, pretty good, pretty good stuff. Uh you're right. Um, lots of new music lately, new heavy music lately, which is really cool. Uh, lots of more tours, it seems, uh, maybe not all coming to Vancouver, but it seems like there's lots there's lots going on again for sure. And um, yeah, so that's that's kind of cool. I don't know if it's gonna make me go to shows any more than I have been recently, but hey, it's still nice to certainly listen to the music and um yeah, I always enjoy discovering or hearing this new stuff.
AdamWe live music for me and you it's a big part of our lives. And uh, you know, for someone who said they swore off live music, you've done a couple this year, and I'm fucking stoked on you. I didn't how what was your review of Elder?
StephenUm uh so yeah. So I didn't I didn't I didn't go. I didn't go oh fuck yeah and and and and and maybe it's one of those things where I'm kicking my ass, but I just you know I I I after after um uh what was it uh after ACDC and then a couple weeks later Guns N' Roses and is it I I don't know, it was just too much for me. I just stimulated I I I am or I was I guess maybe that's it, but I just I uh just the day of the show or just even the evening of the show, I said fuck it, I'm not going. And I I I I probably missed another good show. Two really good bands because both of those uh new albums from those bands are probably at the top of my list so far for album of the year. And uh I know well I've seen them both before. Maybe that's why I decided, well, fuck uh I don't know, I'm not gonna go. But um yeah, I probably probably missed probably missed a good show.
AdamShit, fuck. Well, that it kind of is. Did you um uh Metallica are coming to Vancouver May the 8th, 2027? Uh did you buy tickets for that?
StephenI have not bought tickets for that. I and you know, I'd I'd like to go, but again, it's at BC Place. I'm just tired of that place. I I really am. Unless you get a you know, the sound probably still sucks, but at least if you get a uh uh uh ticket in the pit, obviously seeing better maybe makes a difference. Um I've never been down in the pit, I don't think, for a show at BC Place. So I don't know if it sounds any better. It probably is uh certainly again you can you can see a lot better. Um but I don't know how much tickets are, number one. I I if I can't no at this point I'm not going, but yeah, I would I would think about that one, maybe I guess to see how much tickets are. I don't know. I know you're going, so what are we doing? Yeah. What are you what are you paying for? Are you are you in the pits as always for Metallica or where are you?
AdamYep, so I didn't uh I wanted to get I had a big discussion about this. Everybody who knows me knows Metallica's my favorite band. Everybody wants to show up with me. Let's fucking go. I'm okay, cool. I'm a legacy member, I went to buy tickets. My the snake pit passes, like the general snake pit experience was sold out. Yeah, uh, I think it was $7.25 to be in that said snake pit. I wasn't too crushed about it. Um, the fan experience, like with the black box and all this shit, was twelve hundred dollars. I could have gotten into that, uh, but I did not do that because I get the same fucking shit I got two years ago. This is an extension of the M72 tour, which is now this will be year number five of it on the road. So I thought to myself and had discussions with some friends of mine, and I'm like, I I I've seen the show in its glory, I saw it on the no repeat weekend, so I've already got the best experience of said show. I'm happy they're coming and playing the hometown gig. So I did not buy said snake pit or experience snake pit. So I paid $325 for my pit ticket. Um, and it's the stage in the round, so you can kind of get to where you gotta go and kind of move forward that way. Um but I don't know what the who knows what the set list is gonna be. I don't know, you know, and like it's the first show of the gig. They're doing I think 12 shows, but they're no they're no um no repeat weekends, it's just singular shows. So they're doing a show every seven days, it looks like so the Saturday here, Minneapolis on uh the Friday, fucking Minnesota on the third. So they're they're moving, but they're only doing a show in the city. So it's cool to see your favorite band in your city. Um I felt like I've already paid for the experience I got, and this is just an extension of said experience, so I didn't want to spend the money. Also, plus I'm fucking going to Vegas twice to see them. Exactly. I was just saying that. Yeah, I'm uh I'm okay. I'm just happy to get a Vancouver shirt. I'll probably buy a Vancouver poster and uh put that up worth wall space I don't even own. So um I I I'm good for that, but definitely gotta see the boys in your hometown.
StephenSo I am uh I am on Ticketmaster right now, and that show is sold out. Yeah. So um, yeah, so obviously I uh hey, I'll have to check out Stubhub if I'm really interested, I suppose. But uh yeah, uh like yeah, I don't know. I don't know.
AdamIt'll be a closer, it's you got a fucking year to think about it.
StephenSo it it would be hey, I know it'd be a good show. I'm kinda I I am kind of kicking my butt a little bit about not seeing the last couple of shows. The you know, the especially the most recent one. Uh well they didn't they didn't play Vancouver, did they? They played Edmonton, they played Edmonton. Uh so one of those, yeah, they played Edmonton in Seattle because you went to Seattle for that. Yes. Uh I know some we know some people who saw the show in Edmonton. So uh that I'm kind of kicking my ass for not maybe seeing one of those because yeah, I think that would have been really cool. But that was the that was the they did two shows, like you said, at the Friday and Sunday typically, or whatever it was, right? So yeah, so that would have been really cool. Anyway, we'll see what happens closer to the show, see what tickets are like, if there's anything in if I decide I really want to go. So but at this point, like I said, at BC Place, especially, I don't know that I want to go unless I'm in the pit. And how much are you gonna have to pay to be in the pit now that they are resale tickets?
AdamSo um, I bought when I saw ACDC, I bought uh I was looking at uh tickets to go, I was ready to go, ready to rock. Um, it was all sold out, ready to go. But you know, a week before they released new pit tickets, I think it was four four hundred bucks to get in the pit for AC DC. And I've never I've seen ACD. This is time number three of seeing ACDC, and it was fucking awesome. Yeah, because you you're you're so close to the band, you turn around and there's a full stadium behind you. Like you're just like, holy shit. Same thing happened with Food Fighters and Queens of the Stone Age. We uh I wasn't able to get pit passes for the time of. I bought tickets off of uh tick pic, they were an extra twenty five dollars each. Yeah, uh so I ended up paying four hundred dollars for uh G8 for Queens of the Stone Age Food Fighters. And it was fucking awesome. I took the greatest photo of Josh. Um I wasn't fucking filming the whole gig. I just like took it up and took a photo and it was just one of the greatest photos I've ever actually taken. I was so fucking blown away. And we were big Queen fans and um yeah, it was um it was fucking super super cool. Uh but yeah, the pay pay for the pay ticket at a stadium is uh it's so much um it's so cool. Uh check your uh messages, check all this photo, Josh. I I I was able to snappy snap. Snappy snap. Snappy snap.
StephenUm, that's pretty sweet. Uh uh yes, that's that's a pretty good shot, man. Yeah, that's really good. Holy shit. Yeah, that's really good shot.
AdamLike uh, and it was just like uh I brought the girl to it, and like Josh was Josh is a full-on fucking rock star. He's fucking smoking, he's in the pit singing, like he's rocking. Apparently he's a hunk of water. Uh it's like it's uh it was it was fucking super cool.
StephenSo so spe speaking of Josh, he he's been he's been doing a lot of press lately, and and I assume it's because of the new album coming up, but he's not so he looks don't you think he looks a lot different? Like everybody I've been talking to, every place you go, he he he looks good, but he looks a lot different. What do you do what is your thoughts? Do you know about that? What do you think about it? What's going on? He's no longer married to Brody. Well, uh yeah.
AdamSo that's a lot of it's a lot of stress-free stuff. He probably wants.
StephenYeah, but yeah, but that but that was over a long time ago, anyways, wasn't it?
AdamUm, you know, it could be the end of the day. You know, you're not you don't have a ball and chain to answer to.
StephenYou're like like he looks he looks healthy, but he he still looks older. Like he he just his his face just looks different to me. I don't know. I don't know what it is. I can't I can't place it. But I'm not the only one who feels that way because if you go anywhere on the internet, you're gonna see people thinking or saying the same thing. Yeah, and uh he had a health scare apparently, uh I don't know, not that long ago. Uh I I don't know if that's gotten anything to do with it necessarily, but but I mean he is taking better care of himself, but he he still looks different. I don't know. Anyway, did you see he he's done a really good interview with Rick Beto? Uh I don't know if you've seen that. That's really good. He's also when they were here in Vancouver, he had another interview with Nardwar. He can he him and Nardwar go back like like years, and this because it's he's appeared with Nardwar many many times, so that's really cool. I watched both of those, but he's he's done a lot of stuff. Like if you go on YouTube and just recently just look up Josh Homie, and he's he's been everywhere. He's he's doing interviews and chats and all kinds of stuff going on. So and it and again, I know there's the new album out, but they don't necessarily talk about the new album, it's just kind of uh it's a chat about everything, really. So it's it it it he's a he's a great guy to you know we've seen them up close and personal and stuff at that uh that uninvited guest gig, which is really cool. And uh it was it was fun to meet him and uh and the interview and stuff that happened, and of course the the live tunes. Um but uh I know he's had his ups and downs and some troubles here and there, but uh anyways, it seems like he's got his shit together and he's doing good, so that's that's nice anyway.
AdamSo and that new appearance, uh new Queens of the Stone Age album comes out uh October 30th, so it's just coming up pretty quick.
StephenYeah, lots of music. Lots of music again. I know you gotta go, so even if we don't get to my tunes, uh no, go let's play. Let's let's go, we're good. Let's go quick. Okay, sounds good. Uh I've got a handful of tracks. We'll rip through real quick. Uh Graveyard, a Swedish uh psychedelic, uh I don't know what you want to call them. This band is awesome. I've seen them live. Um, they've got a new album coming out. So when is it out? Oh, it's out now, I think. This is a song called Back from the Grave. Um, really cool stuff. I don't know if I've played, I'm sure I've played music from these guys along the way before, but oh probably. Anyway, check check them out. I I love these guys, awesome stuff, so um, oh yeah. Yeah, really good. Um next band. Well, of course, we've played, both of us have played stuff from these guys before. Clutch. Oh yeah, fucking clutch plays a clutch. New uh new song called Wasted Lands. They've they've got a couple songs recently, but I don't know that there's an album lined up for these guys yet, is there? I've got Oh, there is. There is, because I remember a pre-sale. Oh yeah. So you could order pre-sale, but I don't know when the album is coming out. Anyways, it's something's on the way, so that's really cool.
AdamDid you uh see what Mastodon's doing? No, uh, for album-wise. So they have um their newest album, they're they're it's a raffle that gets they're including like antlers from a prehistoric mastodon is what's branded up into their LP. Yeah. So there's only like a hundred and fifty albums gonna be pressed with the said Mastodon uh like remain, or it's like the records made from the Mastodon like tusks, whatever it is. Yeah, but I thought that's fucking pretty cool.
StephenThat's that's crazy shit. I wonder how they were able to do that or obtain that right now. I wonder how much it's gonna cost for those for that limited pressing.
AdamSo uh that's pretty wild. Mastodon metal band goes literal with wild new album, and only 170 fans can get it. The popular metal band has taken the name literally. Uh Mastodon announced its latest assumed Meryl Deep will be available in a special bone dust vinyl variant. Uh, it was the two LP record was manly pressed with powder from an actual Mastodon fossils after an unusual idea from the news bassist. So they said they one of them acquired it 20 years ago, and they were given a giant bag of Mastodon teeth. So they're taking that gift and pressing their new vinyl. Wow.
StephenThat's crazy, crazy stuff.
AdamYeah, it is crazy facts for you.
StephenYeah. Right on. Uh what else? Uh, okay. Um, where am I here? A new album from King Buffalo. They're they're touring again, too. Well, they were here back in April, I think. They're here again next month at the at the Pearl. New album is uh is coming out. It's called Doomsayer. Uh, first single from that album here is called uh The Slick and the Dead. Uh takes a little bit to get going, but this this song, once it gets going, man, this track just kicks ass. Yeah, I quite enjoyed the song. I don't know if I can uh fast forward here, sort of uh well see it's anyways. Well, it's still going, but it's still getting going. I mean, but uh, anyways, a good track. Uh I've pre-ordered this album with a bunch of my friends from Cam Loops. I think it's out December 4th. I think seven or eight of us got together and saved on shipping by ordering all of this stuff together. So uh because it's it's not cheap. I think we saved 20 bucks by doing this, 20 bucks each by doing this. Yeah, yeah, for sure. Because um yeah, crazy how expensive it is. Anyway, really cool stuff. Uh great band, gotta see them live. I don't know. I may go to the show. I've got an opportunity to see the see the show coming up in a couple weeks at the Pearl. So it'd be nice to see them again. They're always awesome.
AdamI've never seen them, but it's a work night for me. Otherwise, I'd say let's fucking go.
StephenYeah, because I think it's a Monday night, Tuesday night, Tuesday. Tuesday night, yeah. Yeah, that's shitty. Otherwise, yeah, you you you've got to see them at some point. Great, great stuff. Uh, news new song from Power Trip. Um now this song just rips. Uh, I think they've got a uh a seven inch coming out with two new songs. This one's called Precinct Three. Uh oh man, it's just you know, I think a lot of people were really pissed off after Riley uh passed away. Uh this so this is their first new music after Riley passed away a few years ago.
The Old MenYeah.
StephenUh it's a it's a it's great stuff. It's I I love these guys. And um, but a lot of people were pissed. I think I think they performed some some songs or they did a couple of shows with this new singer, and I don't know. What do you what do you gotta do? Right? Uh yes, it's sad what happened with Riley, and um, you know, the he's your front man. Are you supposed to just pack it in? Maybe people were gonna think, okay, they can continue, but let's not call the band Power Trip. Like, I don't know, but uh I don't know. It's not it's a tough, tough position to be in, right? But you gotta carry on.
AdamLike, look at the like so I don't know, you're not the biggest Lincoln Park guy, but they replaced themselves and moved forward with a different singer. Yeah, and uh whenever they start a show, they they kept the name, they record new music without Chester Bennington. But um when they start singing and when they start playing the old school shit, Mike the other co-founder goes, and tonight playing the role of Chester Bennington is you, you keep his legacy alive, so you just fucking move forward that way. Yeah, look at fucking Bon Scott to uh Brian Johnson, look at Lane Stanley to William DeVall, like all these guys replacing all these legacy singers, it's still you're moving on. So fucking get over it, enjoy the music, and move on with your fucking life. Like who cares? Like either support him or don't. Like I it pisses me off to the point where I don't know, I had this conversation with a girlfriend a little while ago, and was like you either you're gonna go like you're ex like you're going for the music, you're not going for the people who are playing it. Like, look at fucking black flag. I don't even think there's a member of Black Flag anymore.
StephenLike well, there is Greg, Greg Inn. Oh, great, uh, but that but that is it.
AdamUh I think you know bass player, I don't I don't know.
StephenWell, he he is the main guitarist, but and he and he's the founder of the one of the founders of the band and founder of SST Records. And uh but but still, but still, you know, people saw you know, people saw Black Flag for the music, but also the they had some great front men, right? You know, from from Ron Rays to Henry Rollins to like you know, they've that they they've had there you go, they've had two or three or four different singers, and they were still called Black Flag, and now and now they've got some guy who knows who the fuck he is, and there's they're still touring his Black Flag. So yeah, you know, so so again, in in that case, I don't give a shit, and I'm not gonna go see them. But you're you're right, there are some bands that are still have great music and they're that they want to carry on, and it's I mean it's it's what they know, and yeah, again, it's sad what happened to Riley, but it's just one guy, you know. It's it's there are other talented members in the band who want to carry on, and yes, they're going to. Yeah, yeah, exactly. And they're going to, you know, they're gonna carry on the legacy, but still they're gonna make new music, and uh, yeah, yeah, you have to move on for sure. So, anyway, uh, that's really cool tune. Uh what do I got? Uh, so this is an this is a remix of an old album from a band called Cathedral. Uh, this is great doom metal. Uh, I know it doesn't start off that way, but anyways, they've got uh they've remixed the album, they've got some alternative takes and some different versions of songs. Uh so the the band's Cathedral, this song is called Death of an Antichrist. Um the album's called The Guessing Game. They call it Rethink because it's a remix. Uh the Guessing Game re uh Rethink. Uh it's also out October 30th with all those other albums coming out. Yep. Um I know it's hard to kind of hear the hear the song and what what really this band is all about, but uh Cathedral's kind of a one of the bigger doom metal bands that came out in the did they come out in the like the like they've been around for a long time, for 30 years, I think, anyway. So there we go. Yeah, just just again. Really good stuff. Uh so some cathedral uh hippie death cult. I know I've played them before. Are they from Portland, I believe? Uh this is a new song called Grit Blood and Bone. Uh, no new album yet. I so far this song's a one-off, but uh good stuff. I I've never seen them, even though they've been up here a couple times. Their albums are great. I think I've got all all three final albums here somewhere. Cool stuff. Uh this is cool. Yeah, yeah, and I enjoy it. Heavy. Uh Ramstein. Have you they've released a bunch of songs now from this live in Mexico City show. Uh, when did this come out or when did they have this show? Um, but there is uh there is a Blu-ray coming out of the concert. They've got all kinds of editions, you know, for for audio, like for you know, vinyl, CDs, all that sort of stuff. Um, they're just so over the top, man. I can always watch some Rammstein. And uh just a massive production, that show of theirs all the time. It's just crazy. Yeah, so um that album's coming out, or all of those releases. Oh, actually, it's going to be in theater. They're viewing it, showing it in theatres first. But then um, yeah, the music's gonna be released after that on various formats. So that's my tunes for the for the week or for the month, whenever it is, however long it's been since we last chatted.
